I've been thinking about a new rifle

After doing some reading in this forum, I think I want to get started in precision shooting. I am looking at the Savage in 6.5 Creedmoor, the one that comes with the Nikon scope. I like the 6.5 because I have a bad shoulder and the lighter recoil appeals to me.

I know if I get serious about this I will need to get a better scope. That's not a problem because I can always use the Nikon on another rifle. How does the recoil of the 6.5 compare to a 243 or a 223? My goal is to work my way up to 600 yard shooting and maybe competing in some local matches. I like the Savage because of its reputation and because it is priced right. I can get the rifle I'm looking at for a little over $500 out the door. I am not looking to spend much if any more than that right now.

Let me say that I know that a $500 rifle is not going to be the end all be all of precision shooting. I do expect it to outshoot me and help me learn how to be a better shooter.

    Comments? Suggestions?

The 6.5 creedmoor recoils more than a 243 in the same weight gun because the 6.5 will typically be shooting heavier bullets.

I believe you can still custom order the Tika in 6.5x55

And TC sells the Venture in 6.5x55

      Cheaper ammo

6.5x55 is actually more expensive to reload for than 6.5 creedmoor as it uses more powder.
The next downside of the 6.5x55 over the 6.5 Creedmoor will be that 6.5x55's only fit in long actions.
6.5 Creedmoor is specifically optimized for a short action receiver.

Thanks for the response. I know felt recoil can be a subjective thing but is there a considerable difference?

Op you might want to look at 7mm-08 more kick than .243 but lot less than .308.

Can take all game that .308 can. Bullets weight 100 to 160gr

No, there is not considerably more recoil with the 6.5 Creedmoor than the 243. It is very easy to get used to.

                    True.
I'm throwing in a good amount more powder than a .308 for each round.

The advantage of the 6.5x55 will primarily be with a longer barrel where you can REALLY take advantage of the extra powder that the 6.5x55 burns.
