Trying on the new KRG X-Ray

Yet another chassis on the market...

KRG started shipping their new X-Ray chassis for the Remington short action and Tikka about a month ago and I was able to grab one last week. Finally got it mated to my barreled action so thought I would share some initial pics. I will be painting this stock to make it look a bit more exciting after I had a chance to shoot it...

Barreled action was comfortable and settling into its AICS home:

But I couldn't leave well enough alone:

Just by replacing the AICS stock with this one, I've already shaved off almost 3 lbs. from the overall weight based on specs. I will weigh it soon to see what the total is now, but I am guessing it is about 12 - 14 lbs. Hope to be able to try it out soon. This stock now has ambi-QD mounts up front, and ambi-QD cups in the butt stock, plus a tripod mounting rail in front of the magazine well. I don't have a tripod or plan to use one, but nice to have that option I guess...

I was looking at these. Id get one if they came with a folding option. how comfortable is that 90 deg grip?

They've said that the whisky 3 components are compatible with the x-ray since they both use the same "spine" for the chassis. However I can't imagine that such a component from them would be under $300 based on the cost difference between the W3 fixed and folding versions. They said they'll eventually start selling the x-ray forend and rear separately(for people with a W3 that want to shave some weight I guess). Whether or not that means they'll actually start offering some configurations on their website instead of simply selling components as add-ons has yet to be seen.

pklin1297, you could use that rail with an adapter, but that should be the second section of rail to replace the nub on the bottom rear of the stock if you want to attach a monopod. The direct tripod adapter is different.

both look really good and I LOVE the AICS stock. I thought about the X-ray, but like osis mentioned, I would go for it if it was a folder.

My long action f-ish style stock is still undecided, but the AICS is probably #1 on my list, then the manners folder. now, if I could only find an extra $500 to pull the trigger on a folding manners T4-A

They are offering a folding option later. I think I might pick one of these up. I like it, its light and simple.

Osis32: Since there is a thumb shelf built into this stock, the 90 degree angle feels rather nice with the shooting thumb on the shelf. Feels more like a Manners/McMillan and better than the AICS while in prone position, at least for my body-build and position, but in all fairness, I never noticed any problems shooting the AICS before.

Merc1138: The stock came with two rail sections, one that can be used for Atlas bipod and/or tripod install (according to Vince at KRG) depending on where you install in the forend (I still prefer aluminum versions), and one for the monopod when installed in the rear. For the Precision Rifle style comps, monopod is a big no-no and I've never found them useful for me so I won't be installing that rail.

As far as the X-ray goes, according to info on the Hide it will be a fixed stock only (non-folding). Now if and when the folding butt stock of the W3 becomes available for purchase that will make it fold, but why not just get the W3 then? I like my stock non-folding...

Its only a 45.00 discount to wait till they are in stock and normal priced.

Its a heck of a lot cheaper then there other stock they offer. What I like is its light weight, and thats a sales point for me. I can also throw that thing in my truck hunting and there wont be a dent, its plastic!

STUPID ME PRICING IS WRONG! I edited that out.

When did they said they were making an x-ray version of the folder? I know Massoud talked about the component compatibility, but I don't recall reading that part.

In a little longer, its in the post some where.
I made a mistake on the pricing, that was something else. It also says you can use the Whiskey 3 rear stocks:
"Modularity: The X-Ray can take the Whiskey-3 buttstocks and vice versa, also the Whiskey-3 can take the X-ray forend and vice versa so it's a completely modular system. We will in the future offer the sub-components separately. (Forends, backbone, and all the buttstocks)"

Im hoping for a long action version soon. But I wont hold my breath.

From Massoud's Snipershide post on 5/12:

"Due to volume, most likely there will not be a long action X-ray. That could change, it depends on what you guys want. We do get asked about a folder sometimes also but that is not likely to happen given the design intent and our feelings about how well a folder mechanism should operate."

Just want to clarify the "folder X-Ray" situation. Looks like it is not going to happen as previously stated...

Here are some pictures of me messing around with paint. Please excuse some paint bleed you see in the pics; the tape sure doesn't like to stick to this slick polymer stock :

Definitely thinking about picking one of these up instead of a T6 for my Tikka

Lpk in is correct, yesterday they posted that... Well that's that. And no long action, that sucks.

Yeah, well it kind of makes sense looking at the cost difference between the stocks, as well as the folding mechanism. The x-ray is a good option because it's $600, but if selling a folder ends up making it cost $900+ it makes a huge dent in the number of people interested, and the LA version being a popularity issue if their sales figures aren't high enough to justify production.
