The axis is a budget rifle,
    Better then the 770.... but
    Still its savage's budget rifle,
Your going to have a debate similar to ak vs ar.
My advice: if you are going to buy and then upgrade and continue to upgrade go Remington, if you are going to get a rifle that is just about perfect out of the box with a few small tweaks here and there then go savage.

Rem 700 over a Axis all day everyday. I own both. The Axis is a budget rilfe and the action isn't something your going to be able to grow with down the road. The 700 action is worth buying that gun alone. The 700 has more aftermarket support than any other bolt gun. That will allow you to do what ever you want to that gun as your shooting develops.

If you hand load, go with the .30-06. If you don't, go with the .308.

I have 30-06 and 308, i find the 308 factory ammo is pricier than the 30-06.
If you hunt, I always find 30-06 lead free ammo for $29.

308 is about $38 and harder to find in the local walmarts for me.

I have a Remmy 700 adl that I bought from walmart back in the 90s and it still shoots great. I cant shoot for crap and i was getting about 1.5" groups with cheap ammo and using a back pack as a rest.

                  To keep the cost down.

Saves about $100 off retail, thats why.

You can buy an aftermarket stock cut for a drop bottom door and then get the magazine kit from Midway. Or even just get the kit and then inlet your stock to have it fit.

Normally I would put my vote in for a savage but in the case of the axis I would run away.

Between the two I would pick the Remington.

Savage Axis is an accurate rifle with a few upgrades, trigger adjustment (cut off one coil), bedding front and tang of receiver and add tubing into action bolt holes to stop action rotation upon firing, float barrel. replace the stock with a boyd's laminate if/when they produce one.

Price wise its about a $50-75 advantage for the Axis and comparable accuracy for a hunting/silhouette (200-500 meters) rifle.

Beyond that distance the Remington with accessories/$$$ galore will take you out further.

The Axis receiver is very stiff (more so then the Rem.) which should enhance accuracy.

The Savage Axis II comes with the AccuTrigger.

Others have pointed out the aftermarket advantages of the Rem 700, and the cost advantages of the Savage Axis, so here's my take on 'em.

Either rifle, actually, will kill a deer just as dead as the other, with a load that the rifle likes. For that matter, so will the Ruger American. As for .308 vs. .30-06, you can't go wrong with either. Seriously. It's a case of, "do you want a Mercedes S-class or a BMW 7-series?" Both rounds are very good.

Here's a related option. If you'd be willing to consider either an older Savage 110-series, or a used Stevens 200 (same as Savage 110 w/o the AccuTrigger), I've seen those w/ scope rings and mounts for under $350. Yep, in very good condition. Don't be afraid of a used rifle in good shape.

+1 for Rem 700. Hard to compare especially if the price isn't a major factor. I was looking at Axis and ended up with the nicer Trophy Hunter XP. If I could have I would have went for the 700. But since you said 500+ yards, 700 can take you there. I don't think I've ever run into a post talking about Axis making it that far comfortably

Sorry to be offtopic but any tips on places to find .30-06 leadless ammo for that price? At walmarts and big 5 I see them for around $40 out the door usually
