Levergun mods - two that I'm considering

Ok, so I've got a 2013 Marlin (Remlin) that runs great. It is one of the new model CNC rigs. Very nice, very good tolerances, etc.

I've got a lever rail from XS on the top, and I was considering a few modifications.

    1. Slimming down my factory forend. I prefer a slimmer profile both in looks and in feel.

    2. I'm thinking of converting from a pistol grip stock to a cowboy-style straight stock. (Is that called a monte-carlo to an english style? I don't know)

With #1 I feel pretty confident due to the fact that I'm a fairly good wood worker, and have all the necessary tools. I think I'll just take my time, and then decide what I want to do as far as re-checkering or engraving.

With #2, what I understand is that I need to consider 3 main parts. The stock itself, the lever, and the lower part of the receiver. I also think I'll probably need to modify or change out the small spring retainer that captures the hammer spring?

Love to hear some input on those who have done these mods, or have decided NOT to for whatever reason.

Also, I'm thinking possibly about sending my gun off to build it into a take-down version, but that's a fairly costly modification, which would likely disallow me from using my XS scout rail. Still mulling that one over. I'm probably simply going to grab a Win model 12 and shorten the barrel for my "takedown" travel gun.

I also did some leather work to it, some like it, some don't. Here she is.

Wow, love the setups, fella's. Thanks for the link, Subrvin.

Since both of you have the scout setup, do you have any opinions on the type of optic I might run?

          I want something quickshooting, but want/need something magnified. I'm thinking a good 1-4 or maybe a 2-7...

this is my go-to rifle for pigs (hunting) and coyote's/feral dogs (we live in a semi-rural area with a healthy population of both)

I really like red-dots for what they are, but I don't want a reddot AND a magnifier.

For a true scout scope, you dont want more then 3x. Its typical for a scout scope to be 2x, 2.5x, or 2.75.

Reason being the point is to have both eyes open to see your entire field of view. You magnify too much, your brain gets sorta confused and you loose the purpose of the scout setup.

I have a vintage leupold scope that is a fixed 2x. With a 1" objective. To me its perfect for shooting 100, 150yrds the eye relief on it is 9-11"

              10-4, that makes sense.

I would just find the stock set you are after and swap them out. You can often trade straight grip stocks and hardware with someone looking for a pistol grip style. EBay and gunbroker usually have the parts needed as well. There are a few different forend designs though so be mindful.

I prefer straight stocks too and detest laminate. It seems like a lot of work to convert for you, since you like wood working why don't you make a crescent or shotgunbutt or replace with walnut like these
If you want to restock your Marlin with something a bit different, you came to the right place.  PLEASE NOTE:  None of my stocks are  FIT OR FINISHED, the photos show finished examples to show you...

Best mods for the new marlin are the: reduced hammer spring & the cross bolt safety replacement!!!
