    rem 700 sps varmit

    Hi all
I wanted to hear some opinions on my next hunting rifle. I wanted to get a reasonably priced tack driver that I could upgrade in the future and came across the sps varmit in 308. Would probably be planning to upgrade the trigger eventually. That sound like a good idea or are there some better options? Thank you

Its a great starter rifle for long distance shooting. Its a bit heavy for hunting, but I carried mine for a week. I just put it on my pack, not over my shoulder.

-The barrel and action are god to go.
-Trigger is okay, I'm still running the factory one and crank out sub MOA groups.
-The stock is junk. Plan on replacing that ASAP. You can shoot with the factory stock, just not very well on a bipod. But if you go into it knowing your replacing the stock you'll be fine.

The left is my first time shooting paper at 300 yards. The right was my damn near (pull the last shot) prefect group.

      If you don't need/want a heavy barrel... I would consider getting a Tikka T3 Lite over a Remington 700.

For hunting I went with a Ruger American, but I wish I spent a little more at the time and went with a Tikka T3 Lite.

That said, I do have a couple heavy barrel Remington SPS rifles and both shoot very well. I typically upgrade the stock and trigger right out of the box.

I have almost the exact same setup as Norcalfocus on mine SPS Varmint, I have the gray Boyd's stock. I was able to grab mine used for 450 and put a stock and glass on it immediately. I would highly suggest getting rid of the trigger asap on them but they are a great rifle, if you end up with a ADL or BDL you can get magazine conversion setups for 100 at midway that use the ruger 308 polymer magazine

If you don't want to go to a DBM, you can pick up the extended floor plate well, like on mine, for $20. Its a great cheap option to hold a few more rounds.

That's a very nice group (right image) at 300 yards.

                rem 700 sps varmit

I would go with the Remington 700P, the 700P comes with HS_Precision stock that the action is full-length aluminum bedded. I thinks the price different makes up on the HS stock.

Perhaps the OP could clarify a bit. A hunting rifle has to trade off a number of things (e.g. carrying weight, stock design) versus being a tack driver - a feature that is most valued on the range shooting paper.
So if the OP wants a gun for hunting, something like a heavy barreled varmint gun is not likely the best idea. Unless of course it's only varmint shooting you're looking for. If you're on your feet, I agree that the Tikka is a great suggestion. They are lightweight (The T3 Lite's or even the Hunter's) and very accurate. But if it's range work you seek, the T3 actually would likely work, but the heavier barreled Remington, the Tikka Sporter or a few other models might be best.
Also, if the OP is a reloader and a hunter, a .270 might be worth considering as well (just thought I'd make it a bit more complicated).
I just can't tell on which side of the use case line the OP's falls.
                  B

Mine was a ADL so for the same price of BDL conversion I could go to the DBM style but the DBM conversion isn't the high end ones (100 instead of 2-250). OP think about also how you are going to, if at all, mod your rifle and see if it is better to get the stock upgraded version, like some others pointed out, the price benefit could really help sway one way or the other.

Thanks guys I think I will do that. I don't have any problem hiking with weight so the weight isn't an issue and everything else sounds like stuff I can deal with until I can upgrade. NorCalFocus what kind of stock is that? Its beautiful

                          700 sps

Or here direct from Boyd Stock with 7 colors to chose from. You still need to bed the action thought.

Yes its a Boyds FT. For the money its an awesome stock. I did pillar bed it myself as well. After bedding and getting my hand loads down, it out shoots me very much.
