    Remington SPS Change

I have a Remington 700 in 300 AAC - 16" heavy threaded barrel, HS Precision stock. The caliber just isn't working well for me and I'd like to explore some options, with an eye on economy of work being done. I reload. I have a 375 H & H pistol and a 416 Rigby rifle (among other things) so am flexible on practical use of the end chambering.

I'm bouncing back & forth between doing something that keeps the 30 caliber barrel and changing the bolt face, or keeping the (223 sized) bolt face and getting a different barrel. I don't particularly want a 223 or a 308.

I'm leaning toward a 6x45 (new barrel, keep the bolt) or a shorty 30 cal like the 300 WSM, 300 SAUM or 300 RCM (keep the barrel, open bolt face).

What I'd like to avoid is buying a new barrel AND new bolt/work on bolt.

Sell your bolt or trade for a WSM bolt on snipers hide. Have a smith punch your current barrel out to 300wsm. That's the CHEAPEST way possible.

I think rate of twist is going to be a problem - it's 1 in 7" and my intent is to use 168 grains and below. Accuracy now is OK with the 125 s or so, but nothing spectacular.

Anybody ever heard of the 30X47 Lapua? Seems if I go with that I'll need a new barrel which, considering rate of twist in the present one, is probably the better approach all around.

With the amount of work that might have to be done... have you considered just selling the rifle complete and starting fresh?

Keep the stock and DBM if you like and just drop something new into place...

Sell aac rifle. Buy .308/30-06/7mm-08/.284/.300wm/.300wsm/.338 new. Less headaches!
