You can't hit long range with a skinny barrel? What kind of aftermarket support do you need for long range?

Skinny barrels lack rigidity and heat up too fast.

Not repeatedly for more than a couple shots.

Ah, so it can be done then. If someone were to slow down and not get their barrel over heated could it be done repeatedly?

              Sure.
Just wait 10-15 minutes between each shot and thermal wander should not be an issue if you keep the gun in the shade to cool off.

I just received a Boyds' finished Featherweight Thumbhole stock for a Remington 783 on Tuesday last in California.

The stock is comparable to other wood laminate stocks I have purchased. CNC inletting and carving, coupled with a decent sanding and spray applied finish appears to rival a factory stock. Rutland's Stratabond plywood is very uniform and the glue lines reduce porosity giving an easily filled surface finish. Boyds' uses thermoplastic inserts in the area of both action screws with the front countersunk for the screw head. The long action .30-06 fits perfectly, with the barrel inlet free floating all the way to the front of the recoil lug, the same way I bed my Savage's.

Down side of the thumb hole stock is that the distance from the grip to the trigger is fairly long, just at the limit of even my big paws. A different stock style may be better for stubby fingered people. The upside of a Boyds' stock is it costs $100 plus shipping. I pay $400, just for a finish sanded pillar bedded Savage stock and then spend a couple of day's glassing and finishing it.

There are a growing number of aftermarket parts and accessories coming available, but the model is very new with only a small number in use.

I ordered a Criterion 24" double lapped Stainless Steel barrel in the Remington Magnum contour, chambered for the .25-06 Remington as a prefit from Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply: http://northlandshooterssupply.com/ or call (763) 682-4296. Northland also sells a precision recoil lug with locator pin that requires a slot be milled in the bottom of the receiver, a la the Savage for ease of swapping barrels. There is also a trued barrel nut and specially dimensioned action wrench available.

Boyds' stock for the factory barrel contour will take the Magnum Contour, but requires fitting. Heavier barrels will require a special order to accommodate. Because I have many heavy barreled varmint rifles, I decided to keep this one a bit lighter. I won't bed or modify this stock until I have the new barrel in hand.

The Criterion barrel cost $335.00 with a matte finish, plus $30.00 shipping with the other accessories I ordered.

Pac-Nor is also offering prefit and installed barrels for the 783. However a Pac-Nor can run 7 months for delivery, while the Criterion from Northland was quoted at 4 months. Criterion only supplies the 783 barrel through Northland. A Pac-Nor will cost more than the entire rifle but it's only money.

Another new source of parts is Pacific Tool and Gauge: http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/r...erformance.htm scroll down the page for 1 and 2 piece bolts and interchangeable bolt heads for cartridge conversions.

Main message is that the new birth was successful, the kid is growing fast and will soon need a bunch of toys and clothes that fit, so watch the marketplace.
