I hope this is the right spot. Just wondering if you guys could tell me if a Stevens 200 with bushnell scope for $295 is a good deal. It is chambered in .223 and has about 100 rounds through it. Looking to make it my first rifle. Thank you for the help!

What should I look for physically when inspecting the rifle upon purchase?Comment

Look down bore. Make sure clean. Look at muzzle. Make sure no burrs or wear or other problems.
Take a dollar bill and run along barrel inside stock. Look for pressure points and alignment.
Check trigger pull. Check bolt's action and closing.
Best bet is to take to range and cycle some rounds through it. But that's not always possible. However most bolts should shoot fine. Anything troubling will most often turn up on inspection. Besides you can also just look at the general condition. If it's good then most likely you're good to go.NRA Life Member since 1990
They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

Yeah, test firing isn't an available option. However, I did most of the things you had mentioned and everything checked out. Thanks for the help. 10 days!Comment

I believe you mean the savage model 10. None the less, Thank you for your replies. I made the purchase and my baby gets out of jail in 8 days.Comment

Depends on whether he is thinking of a long action or short action. Granted yours would be a short action, but a 110 is essentially just a long action model 10.
Enjoy your new rifle. I just scored a helluva deal myself yesterday, $250 for a 60 rounds fired Savage Axis in .223, going to shoot it after work either tomorrow or Thursday.Any man who afflicts the human race with ideas must be prepared to see them misunderstood. - H.L Mencken

I was interested in that gun as well but all the reviews backed the stevens 200 over the savage axis. Let us know how it shoots!
Also note: Savage Axis II coming out soon (has accutrigger)Comment

I paid $100 for a stevens or savage 223 that had a trigger problem.
It ended up being that the prior owner had "worked" on the trigger himself and removed too much metal.
I got a replacement trigger for $8 on ebay that fixed it up...Randall Rausch

Just now seeing this thread. Yeah, that's a decent deal. Stevens 200 is older Savage 10/110 w/o the AccuTrigger. You done pretty good."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

Good score!
Bought my 200 when they first came out. Adjusted the trigger as much as I could and had to replace the mag spring with a section of spring out of a AR mag. The factory one was weak and didnt have enough force to positively push the rounds up to the feed lips. Now the rifle loads, fires , ejects perfectly every time. My barrel is a 1-9 twist and prefers 69gr bullets (or longer), or the long 55gr barnes MPG bullet.Comment

Thanks for the replies! I'm definitely going to replace the spring now that you mentioned it
So far i've reinforced the forend with steel rods/epoxy, installed an adjustable cheek rest, and remolded the grip to a more vertical angle.
Next in line is to bed the action, remove the grip texture from the forend, and remold the bottom rear of stock for an off hand hold.Comment
