Calgun Member Shoots 300 WSM For 1ST Time

I met up with a Calgun member at the range last sunday.I wanted him to try out a 300 WSM for the very first time and this is his first 5 shot group with the rifle.
I asked him if the recoil was a problem and he said no.He also shot a 700 Remington of mine using a firm hold and shooting it free recoil both. This was to determine if it made any difference in group size.It liked a firm hold for best accuracy but unfortunately I didn't get any pictures.Maybe he will see this and post the picture of the two groups.

I had him do a ladder test with the 300 wsm going from 58-66 grains of powder so he could see how the shots string vertically as well. The picture shows 9 shots at 100 yards next to a quarter and with the quarter almost covering the group to show how much vertical is typical for a 8 grain change in powder.

Hopefully the pictures will show how he did using unfamiliar equipment from a complete stranger.
He had a Siamese Mauser in 45-70 with a heavy barrel and nice stock he let me shoot.I put the first two shots using 350 grain cast bullets into a nice figure eight.I debated the third shot for a few minutes and then let it fly and hit low and right to ruin the group.
Also met a member of the Nor Cal Precision Rifle Club while we were there shooting a 7WSM and 180 Bergers.I think his name was Chuck.

Edit: The top picture with the caliper is sideways 90 degrees. His aiming point was the ink spot and he had no warm up shots. The target got dropped and that is why you see some mud on it.Conditions were moderate winds from 2 O'clock to 7 O'clock.

Edit: Forgot to say earlier that his group is 5 shots.

Very impressive groups, looks like you have a great combination of rifle/ammo/shooter. What is the rifle?

Very nice groups! What rifle/scope/ammo used? Also was there any bipod/rest/bag used?

I don't know much about the shooter except he sold me some gunpowder a couple weeks ago and seems like a very nice guy.
The load for his target was 64.4 grains of H4350 and a custom bullet with Norma brass and CCI primers.
Scope was a Nightforce and he shot it off a front rest.
Remember this was his first time ever shooting this gun and it was his first five shot fired out of a cold bore.
Five shots in the low 2's is pretty good in my book.If you look at his group 4 of those 5 shots were probably in the 1's.

That's the largest quarter I have ever seen!

Seriously, I too shoot a .300wsm and it's a real tack driver, even with factory ammo.

I got a phone call today from the shooter wanting to know when we would be shooting again.Nothing funner than shooting an accurate rifle.Shooter goes by the name Ray even though I called him Ryan several times.

Look at his aiming point on the target. The target was flipped over backwards so the hits could be seen much better. Most lower powered scopes cover up a large area of the target making it difficult to create the same point of aim for each shot.If your scope doesn't point at the exact same point each shot it doesn't mater how accurate your rifle actually is your groups will suffer.

The shooter was using a Nightforce scope set on 42 power and he was aiming at a dot made from a ball point pen.At 42 power he said the scopes dot was floating inside of the pens mark on the target. That is a very tight point of aim.

The 5 shot group was fired using 64.4 grains of H4350 but if you look at the Ladder test there was virtually no vertical stringing from 63 grains to 66 grains.

I plan on trying 65.5 grains in the morning.

I would like to get another Calgun member to give it a try.I would prefer a new or newer shooter rather than a seasoned veteran shooter.I am in northern california.
Maybe OleYeller who posts here is next?

This is both generous and sadistic at the same time. This can lead one to a big *** credit card statement.

Funny you mention that. The shooter is thinking about building one.

You should let the next person shoot something a little
more "manly"...like the Dasher heavy gun if you still
                    have it.

                      Hey Rick
You getting ready for The Nationals?
I was telling Crawford this will be your year to win it all.
I am thinking of having Bob Dorton shoot my 300 WSM at 600 and 1000 yards using my loads and rest just to see how it does.
Speaking of 6 Dashers did you see the group in the picture below?
                      10 shots at 1000 yards.
The empty case is a 6 Dasher at 1.554 inches long.
The shooter shot my blue lightgun with a tuner on it in 6 Dasher but not my 6 Dasher heavygun.
There was a post here a while back about shooting a 308 Winchester to see what you can get out of a factory barrel but using a benchrest platform to eliminate each piece of possible error.
Some nut got on the thread and convinced the moderators my loads were unsafe so
I wanted a total newby to shoot my loads to see if they knocked him on his tushy and I showed him the mysterious headspace posted about here all the time.
If I had more time I was going to have him change out several barrels.

I need another northbay shooter who is a total newby to try out my junk and swap out some barrels then post how hard it is and how long it took.I like it when you can take away all the hype.
                      Lynn

                        I think I need a 6mm rifle.
