Looking at a pump 30-06 - advice please?

I have one in .270, with only the metal butt plate 5 shots would leave a massive bruise. I have a slip on pad, nice and soft but makes for another problem. That way the combination has given 4 people including me bad cases of scope eye, one cut to the bone around his eyebrow. I'm sure any lightweight rifle with a largish round would be similar.

Mine was obtained used many years ago, I got it for the super low price of $150 including scope. Shoots like crap, the bore is pitted and beyond worn out. Still, it's a lot of fun. When I take it to the range, I'll tell anybody showing a sign of interest in it that I'm sighting in my pellet rifle. Then, when they are not looking my way slap in a mag and rip out 4 shots real quick. I guess I like that look I get when it goes BOOOM and a 2 1/2" case goes flying out.

Back in the 50s and 60s some PDs issued 760 carbines for their rural patrols. It was also the rifle of choice for deer hunters in Pennsylvania when I lived there. I have a lot of affection for my 760.

I had one, a 1952 760 I picked up years ago until I gifted it to a relative. I changed the stock with a new one from Boyds it actually reduced the felt recoil (which was substantial) probably due to a different angle of rise since it was a 870 replacement. the forearm is not available from them .
I found the best factory ammo it seemed to like was fusion 150 grain from federal. with hand loads it shot 1-1/4" at 100 yards with fusion about 1-1/2"
nice rifle in my opinion, faster second shot than most bolt guns.
I have heard of them being referred to as "Amish assault rifles" back in the Pennsylvania area.

No semi's allowed for hunting in Pa. With the thick woodlands and hilly terrain a successful second shot from a bolt gun on a white tail is pretty unlikely. The pump rifle or carbine is perfect white tail medicine. The Remington 14 and 141s were also very popular when I was a young man there. The recoil from a 760 isn't as much of an issue back there since the hunter is swaddled in three or four layers of winter clothes since deer season starts in November.
