    Help with a build

    Hello CG'ers,

I am looking for a mid to long range shooter.

I am in the market for a Remington 700 and at work today I spoke to a fellow shooter that sparked my interest in a .260 cartridge. He told me the process of converting a r 700 into a .260 but I have no experience in this type of work.

Experts please chime in and help a fellow out.

What size round should i start with to convert to a 260?
What are the parts that i need to convert into a 260?
is the a reputable gunsmith or an experience CG'er can help me with this build?
Can someone give me the ball park price on this setup? Around the price of a 5r?
Is there a gunsmith or fellow CG'er knows how or will take this build?

    Thanks in advance.

I suggest you got a .308 learn how to shoot that caliber, then switch to the .260.

But to answer a few questions for you, it will cost you the price of a 700 ($650ish) plus a new barrel ($300ish) then the cost of the smith to install it. The .260 is based off the .308 case. So you start with a 308 case and resize it in a 260 die. So the same rings true for your gun, by a .308 and all you have to change is the barrel.

      1) Do you hand load ammo yet, or do you plan on doing so?

If not, 6.5 Creedmoor is a better option as Hornady makes loaded ammo for it.

      2) Do you plan on shooting in some sort of competition, or just casual range plinking. If it's the latter, .308 is a better choice because the barrel will last much longer than a 260/6.5

I will definitely put the 308 to work, then convert it to the 260. I've shot 308 and like it but I read that 260 has less recoil and accurate and affective.

He even suggested a nice scope called the huskemaw. Looked it up and it's expensive. Wowzers...

        thanks for your input.

I'm in the process of picking up a r 660 in 308 for range and when i get into hunting i can use the 660. But we'll see if i pick up the 660 but definitely the 700.

i just have a thing for bolt action.
