    Rifle ID help?

Hello everyone, my wifes father passed away and this is one of the rifles he left behind and I don't even know what caliber it is. I have seen mum markings on old Japanese arisaka rifles before but this looks much newer. Any info on it would be appreciated. Thanks

The C&R guys will know better than me, but my initial guess is a sporterized Japanese Arisaka. The chrysanthemum blossum roll mark was the mark put on Japanese small arms prior to end of WWII. My guess is it was an import or a capture that was taken back to the states and bubba'd up in a sporter fashion.

Someone with more knowledge, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Looks like junk. I'll buy it for $25. But seriously I don't know what it is other than beautiful. Good luck!

Sporterized Arisaka for sure. It has zero collector's value at this point. But, it's probably a great shooter. It will have more value as an heirloom than the $200-$250 that I think it would sell for.

The rear sight is probably worth as much as the rest of the rifle.

Too bad. It would now be worth much much more in it's military clothes. That "flower" on the receiver ring, is the imperial chrysanthemum. Japan decided to remove all of them from their rifles, to save face. The ones that made it back to the US as war trophies, are mostly the only rifles that kept them.

BUT! Being your Dads gun, its value is measured in memory
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

Rear sight can be 50-150 . Most of these rifles have the mum ground off. Shooters did these in the 60s

I guess you could look at it as just another sporter Arisaka or you could look at it as the custom rifle it is. Either way its a really nice looking heirloom.

Sportereized type 99. Very popular back in the 50 and 60s. use the above link and match the markings that are on the left side of the receiver and you should be able to get serial umber, mfg plant, and date from that if everything is still there.

I've handled a few type 99s, but I haven't seen that rear sight before. The type 99s I've handled have all had anti-aircraft calipers for the rear sights. Is this the later standard sight for the later type 99s?

Looks like a Williams sight to me.
