    243 twist rate

How light of a bullet will the 9.25 twist rate of a savage 243 handle accurately?

I've been shooting 80 gr TTSX out of it and they are really accurate.

I've shot everything from the 58 grain VMax to the 95 grain SMK out of mine and they've all done under MOA.

        Light bullets are no problem.

With light bullets you will burn out the barrel in 2000 rounds, 100 grain max for most 243's.

I'm on the fourth barrel on one of my 243s. I burned out one barrel on a weekend jack rabbit shoot in Idaho in the mid 80s. The good thing about Savages is that the barrels are easy to change.

Nice racks are much better. You can grab both sides of the rack to help stabilize while mounting.

I've been spending too much time trying to decide on a cartridge for low recoil long range shooting and possibly hunting.

Anyways I found this for helping to see if I'd need a special twist barrel to shoot some of the sleek and heavy VLD bullets if I went with a .243.

I think these twist rates are optimal and you might get away with around 70 grains or more with a 1:9.25 twist? No experience though, just a guess

I'm having trouble finding bullet lengths for this calculator, it's not listed in my lyman reloading handbook or any manufacturer websites I've visited. If you do more research then you'll know for sure though.

I have shot anything from a 60 gr to a 105 gr HPBT Hornady's out of my .243. 9-1/8 twist. I shot mostly 105 gr bullets at 600 yards out of this rifle at 3000 fps and shot out the barrel in 1828 shots. I have heard others from our club get 2500 shots from theirs using H1000 instead of the R19 that I used.
