Fun outing with my dressed up Savage Axis

I picked up a Savage Edge in .223 awhile back, and wasn't too impressed with the factory stock. When I would load the bipod, there was noticeable forearm flex. Groups with steel-cased ammo were OK, but nothing spectacular. I purchased this Boyd's thumbhole stock in January and was very impressed with fit, finish, and the easy drop-in installation. Factory screws worked fine.

    Before and after shots:

    Rifle Details:
    - Custom 3lb trigger spring off ebay. Works great, didn't have to guess/modify my factory spring. A lot cheaper than a Timney/Rifle Basix. LINK if you're interested.
    - Boyd's featherweight thumbhole stock in forest camo. Great stock.
    - Burris Signature Zee Rings, Medium, 1". At this height, the bolt knob barely clears the eye bell of the scope. I got lucky.
    - Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 AO. All groups were shot at 14x. Love this scope!
    - Harris 6-9 BR bipod

I feed my AR a strict diet of steel-cased munchies only, so I decided to splurge a little and see what this rifle was capable of. I ordered a hodge-podge of 223 from sgammo and brought some of my commie steel rounds out to do an informal unscientific range test. I'm not the best or most patient shooter, but I did try to focus on breathing and trigger pull for this exercise.

5 round groups were shot with the following ammo:
    Herters 55gr FMJ (steel)
    Wolf 62gr FMJ (steel)
    Wolf MC 55gr FMJ (steel)
    MFS 55gr FMJ (zinc-plated steel)
Golden Bear 62gr HP (brass-plated steel)
    PMC 55gr FMJ (brass)
    Wolf Gold 55gr FMJ (brass)
    PPU 55gr FMJ (brass)
AE 50gr varmint tip (brass) - this was the most expensive, so I had high expectations

    Ammo:

    Notes:
    - ~70-75 degrees, beautiful day out at LPRG. A bit windy, mostly in gusts.
    - Shot sitting/benched off a Harris BR bipod, rear sandbag.
    - Distance: 100y, 5 round groups.
    - Cold bore shots went wide left. When I zeroed the gun, I had to adjust windage right, that's why my first two groups are to the right. I corrected left after that.
    - After about 20 rounds, I had really bad barrel mirage that plagued me the rest of the day. I had to guess on some shots. I'm going to have to remedy this in the near future. Found some DIY solutions online. Open to suggestions.

    Ammo test 1
    9 targets, .5" white centers.
Groups were shot left to right, top to bottom.
AE 50gr did not fail me, Wolf Gold looked decent. PMC shot low.

    Ammo test 2
4 targets, 1" white centers, with .5" red pasties.
Kinda rushed these and pulled a couple of them.
Best group of the day was with the PPU.
Of course, I pulled the last shot of the day. Rangemaster called out the 2 minute warning for ceasefire and, I know, excuses excuses.

All in all a fun day. I was a bit rushed/pressed for time, but it's going to rain the rest of the week and I really wanted to get out to the range. Feb is always a stressful month (work and family), so it was nice to just get away for awhile. I'm definitely going to address the barrel mirage issue and see if that makes a difference. I also saved my brass and hope to start reloading in the near future.

Nice report. Will have to try the same test with my .223 Savage M11.

      Really nice work

How much does the entire rig weigh? I've got the hankering to get one just to have as a project.

Good job. Nice groups and stock. More info on stock and action please. Does this have a bottom drop mag or top load only? Cannot tell from pictures. Nice stock, how much work did you have to do for fit? Did you bed it? Post pics with bipod.

Very nice report. Looks like some very impressive groups from a rifle many pundits say is a POS. I've maintained Savage has been severely maligned by the gun press and gun public in this country for a long time. I had a heavy barreled .308 that would shoot three rounds into a single .308 hole at 100 yards.

About 8.2lbs on my bathroom scale (which has lied to me in the past). Minus bolt, bipod, ammo. So probably somewhere between 8-9 lbs. Great project gun. I got one used and sold the factory Bushnell scope/rings for $40. My only complaint is the OAL w/ Boyd's stock is 42.75". Just a little too long for my 42" Bulldog double rifle case.

Except for the lightened trigger spring, it is a unmodified Edge/Axis action (LINK). Detatchable 4-rd mag (which actually fits 5 rds of 223). The Boyds stock (LINK) was a true drop-in installation. No fitting required, I did not bed it. With the stock, the barrel is free floating, which is a big improvement over the polymer factory stock.

Even though Boyd's says it is out of stock, you can still order it with a 3-4 wk lead time. Looks like they just started selling left hand Axis stocks as well.

Looks great man. I have an Edge, I was looking at those stocks but they had so many options or variants, I was over whether pretty quickly on buying one. Nice shooting tho

Nice report op. I have an Axis and I hate the stock on it as well. Ive been looking at those boyd stocks for awhile now...
Oh and I dont understand why people bash the axis. It is a cheap entry level gun. Mine is very accurate and I love it.

I've heard the axis is a great entry level bolt rifle... I was going to pick one up until I found a Remington 700 for just a little more than the axis at the time.

Looks good with that stock. Way better than stock, pun intended

Look to be pretty good groups for non-match ammo.
The actual value of above $.02 is less than $.01 after taxes.

It looks nice but I don get the overall concept of buying a cheap rifle and then buying stock to dress it up. You could have bought a much nicer rifle for what you have into it.

You're probably right... I'm sure I could find something nicer off the rack, but I typically don't like to spend over $500 on any firearm, but that's just me. I'm more of a function over form type when it comes to guns.

                        Savage Axis 223 (used) +$300
                        Sold Bushnell Scope/rings -$40
                        3lb Trigger Spring +$20
                        Boyd's Stock +$115

                        Total out of pocket: $395

The scope/rings/bipod would have to be bought for any rifle, and can easily be used on another project if I decide to sell this one.

No need to make excuses to anyone, you put together a fun, decent-shooting rifle for not a lot of money.

You could bed the stock with DevCon steel putty yourself and for the barrel-heat mirage, either slow down (!) or affix a mirage-band. Google is your friend.

                            Nice,
you can get that dialed in by working up a good load,
making sure your action is properly bedded-nice

Thanks. I checked out some bedding methods online, and it may be beyond my abilities at this time. I had some leftover automotive heat shield tape and a long strip of rigid cardboard and rigged up a mirage shield for the barrel. I'll need to pick up some velcro strips as well.

Too bad PSA is out of a lot of their 223 since they have free shipping. Would have liked to try out a couple other brands.
