So I doing my monthly pass around the local shops for ammo when I walked into the Discount Gun Mart and saw a lever gun on the rack. I didn't own a lever gun or anything in .45 colt.
Well I'm weak for a new toy so I picked it up. It's jailed right at the moment but I was wondering what everyone here thinks of these Winchester 1892 replicas. I purchased the R92-2001, which has the 24 inch octagonal barrel and a blued finish. I'm probably going to make a new stock for it in the future and ditch the semi-buckhorn rear sight with one of the safety-mounted peep sights out there.
I am willing to do all the "slicking" of the gun myself, recently purchased a DVD explaining it and I'm no stranger to light gunsmithing. I may also drill and tap the receiver, I haven't decided.
SO. First things first: Does anyone have any experience with these rifles, or any suggestions as to what to feed it? And speaking of feeding it, does anyone have any good sources of .45 colt ammo? Or, preferably, does anybody know any good handloads for it running 3fff powder or pyrodex (For economical reasons mostly; I can get black powder/substitutes in my budget nicely. Additionally I love a bit of smoke and it is going to be a range toy).
Any help you guys can offer is greatly appreciated!
