I'm still puzzled by the anti-used gun sentiment. Finding a nice safe queen or otherwise ignored gun is a great way to go. Most of my guns are 2nd hand (or maybe more).

Based upon what the OP has said he would use it for go with the used SPS.

Ruger needs to stick with making 22 pistols and revolvers.

      M700 hands down.

Depends, for a first rifle or for a hunting rifle that you are not worried about scratching, the American is a great gun.

For something that you can build on and make a real long range target rifle out of the Remington is much better.

You really are not going to find a gun that is good at both, the long range rifle will be murder to tote around hunting(it can be done, I know a guy who hunts with a Savage 110BA, but I stick to my old .30-30), and the light weight hunting rifle will be murder on your shoulder to shoot for long periods of time at the range.

Buy used, seems many people are ignorant on the subject or enjoying spreading fud on used guns. I doubt you will find a gun in the classifieds that has seen over 500 rounds, these barrels of today can see a ridiculous amount of shooting and remain consistency. I have a pre-64 model 70 that has hunted every deer season since 1963. Passed hands with grandpa and 2 uncles before me and it will shoot 1inch groups at 100 yards.

Many people who own 700s bought it on a whim after seeing mark wallberg in Shooter and have maybe 3 boxes through them. I recommend u buy a stock used gun, you will save hundreds of dollars and never notice a difference. The only time I worry about buying used is if it looks like google blew up on it and it is filled with taticool crap.

I don't think you will not go wrong either way

              Two different guns...

That's why I bought a Ruger American... occasional hunting. Hunting is new to me, so I wanted an affordable option to beat up while I get into it...

I could have used one of my existing target rigs but I didn't want to deal with the size / weight.

Personally I wouldn't be overly optimistic about the Ruger American filling your long range target needs, especially if its something you really want to get into.
