    Remington 721 300 H&H Magnum

Just acquired a Rem 721. It's a 300 H&H Magnum. Owner recently passed away and his brother didn't want it so he said $300 and it yours. Well I couldn't say no.
He also gave me a box of what looks like some old ammo but unfortunately it's the wrong caliber. Brother just saw 300 and assumed it was the right stuff.

        Acquired a 721 300 H&H myself recently.
Very nice shooting guns. They're a little heavy but shoot very well. I love mine
        $300 is a great deal.

Sell that box of 300 weatherby and offset your costs further. Good score on the rifle

better make sure it is 300 weatherby. 300 H&H is the parent for the Bee. Not too much of a stretch to take some 1x 300 bee from gun broker, run it through the H&H die, fireform, and put the loaded ammo back in the bee box.

That stock looks kinda rough. Looks like a $300 rifle to me, personally. I hope it has some history or sentimental value that makes it priceless to you.

What a lot of new shooter don't know is the 721/722 series Remington rifles are very nicely machined and very smooth cycling rifles that preceded the 700 series.

The trigger is also exceptionable when cleaned/tuned/adjusted, it has 1/2 the sear bearing surface and is adjustable down to 1.5-2lbs.

The stock and bottom metal is the only drawback that can be fixed with 700 series stock (minor inletting for safety) and bottom metal.

As usual with older rifles a through cleaning/disassembly is required and may be a challenge to a few of the new generation who cant even change the oil in their cars.

now that is interesting. I think my BIL has a 721/722 he got for a steal. that might be a good gift idea for him. Steal his rifle, buy a boyds or other and restock it for him, give it back after borrowing it. Though im too cheap to replace his bottom metal.

What's "wrong" with the 721 bottom metal?

My father used one of those. Sadly a family member sold it. You ever want to sell it I'd like to be first in line. An excellent rifle. You got lucky.

I'm not much on all the "tacticoolness" going around now but the 721 bottom metal is pretty basic - stamped one piece trigger and floorplate. Get's the job done I suppose, mine's held up OK.

very interesting, I see that now. I think my BIL rifle is a blind mag. Maybe its not a 721 afterall.

Are you sure the ammo doesn't fit?
It was a very common practice to run a 300 Weatherby reamer into a 300 H-H chamber and get a more modern round.I would try a piece of brass and see if it fits.
When chambering a 300 Weatherby today a lot of gunsmiths will run a 300 H-H reamer in first to hog out the chamber before running in there shiny new sharp 300 Weatherby finish nreamer. The 300 H-H reamers are cheap as nobody is shooting them anymore and they are piloted.
