    Savage long range hunter

I checked out a lrh at the store and it doesn't have a heavy barrel. What makes it better for long range than any other accurate hunting rifle?

"Better" is subjective. It is just a model that Savage offers with special features that some thiink they need. Seems to be a heavier rifle (helps with recoil) have a stock that includes an adjustable cheekpiece and a longer barrel (26") than some. Longer barrel can give a little more velocity. They also offer it in a couple of desireable calibers like the 338 Lapua and the 6.5-284. Another subjective term is accurate because what is accurate to me may not meet your accurate standards and vice versa. Some people want a dime size group or better at 100 yards and others will accept 2" moa. Lots of rifles can do the latter straight out of the box. I have made several of my regular rifles be just as accurate as some of these models they are selling as so called long range hunters. It is just up to you if you want the "cool" looks or you want the features they are offereing. Personally, I wouldn't buy them. If I were buying a 338 Lapua, it would more than likely be a H S Precision, but that is me.

Hunting rifles should not have heavy barrels as you have to carry them in the field.
If the gun has a longer barrel, it gives you more velocity which does help when shooting at longer ranges.
Hunting guns don't need a heavy barrel because you shoot so few rounds that barrel heating is not really an issue.

nothing, but the price is right and it's still a great rifle (mine was, anyways).
