Try the mineral spirits first, wait until dry, THEN use the steamer.

Better yet would be a heat gun so you wouldn't have to worry about any water messing up the wood.

I do have a heat gun handy, any worries about it going too hot? Obviously don't want to burn the wood, but I figure there is some sweet spot to bring it out while not cooking it in.

Mineral spirits are great for the metal parts. But I've read it's not good for the wood, and won't get the deep cosmo out anyway (since it's soaked through all the wood).

I've tried the garbage bag in the sun with good results, but in winter that won't work. I made a Mosin oven with a box and temp adjustable heat gun a few weeks back. Takes two stocks. Best way I've found for the winter. Wipe them down every hour or so. I used bricks to direct the heat more evenly inside the box. Used a cheap piece of HVAC tube to set the heat gun in. You only need the temp to be around 140 or so inside the box. I've done a few with this and worked better then anything else I tried.

I thought about it! Didn't try it though.

I would think a small space heater too if you could duct the air into the box. Took about 5 minutes to make though and worked great.

Like many Mosin addicts I started with a Big 5 Mosin several years ago too. Unfortunately you just missed all the C&R fun that was pre 2014. Still though, to me Mosins offer the most amount of fun for the least amount of money. Buy a bunch of ammo and go nuts. Next you'll probably be looking into getting a Mosin carbine.

Surplus ammo is a must.

Since it came with the sling, bayonet, and ammo pouches I've considered getting more tacticool (for 1931) stuff to wear as a joke on a couple of my range ninja buddies. I don't think they would get it though.

The mosin mall ninjas out pretty well. That archangel stock, maybe a bipod...

Definitely going to do what I can in the garage, for little money, to get her to shoot, look, and work the best she can. I bought it with the intention of it being a project gun. Nothing crazy mind you, my day of poking around after purchasing has once again confirmed that the sky is the limit even when starting with a $150 rifle.

I live in a mobile home park where I have no garage and still managed to clean, strip, and refinish the rifle all in the driveway with a couple of sawhorses and didn't cost me all that much at all; just the materials and that was it which I think I did for only 10-15.

I didn't worry about it getting too hot, I usually ran it over a large section of wood until I saw the cosmo bleeding/evaporating out, wipe down with a rag, keep heating until no more comes out, then move onto the next section.

I'd use an oven glove on the hand doing the wiping, those things get HOT.

edit: also, for getting the majority of it off the wood without harming the shellac coating/wood, try using Tilex Lemon scent with NO bleach. Can find it at Walmart, chemically it breaks down the cosmo and won't harm the wood/finish.

Thanks a bunch guys, once again pleasantly surprised by the number of helpful responses from this community. Can't wait to clean her up and take out some fascist milk jugs.

Funny thing is one of the local ranges here is pretty much ran by and for old fogies and their wood stocked bolt guns, so I'll fit right in at what is usually a C and R shoot most days

For my money, my Mosin is one of the most accurate milsurps with iron sights at my range. Of course... it is an M39...
