The stock itself is not strong enough to be free floated.
They actually use the barrel to support the stock.
Any attempt to open up the stock to float will find the stock drooping more until the stock is touching the barrel again.

If you don't have money now, save up some until you do.
    Then, replace the stock.
Even a $100 wood stock would be better than those SPS plastic stocks.
    A $200 HS Precision take-off stock from a 700 5R or a 700P would be even better.

I had a buddy put a 24" SPS varmint on a bipod and it was free floated all the way down the barrel. Never touched anywhere the whole time. I can't say with any real positivity that it didn't touch while it was firing though. Without sensors and video, its hard to say. You could still glass bed a synthetic stock and at least make it more consistent for the action screws, or you could run pillars. There are options to make it better IMO, but for the price, I'd go with HS precision or Manners for the money. Both make good inexpensive stocks.

I have the same rifle. From what ive read the 1/12 twist like heavier ammo ie 168gr. But yeah the stock isnt the greatest however you can improve your groups by trying some of the techniques mentioned above.

            1/12 twist like heavier ammo?

            Compared to what?

1:10 would be a tight twist that likes "heavier ammo from 168gr-200+ grain ammo.

1:11 or 1:11.25 "tactical" rifling by remington seems to really like the 158-177grain ammo.

1:12 or slower twist is going to be the 130-155grain area.

These are just general blanket statements that TEND to be true, but there are very drastic real world differences that people have with their personal rifles and different use. I've seen Tikka T3 rifles shoot ammo that wasn't intended for their twist rate with ridiculously great results, and vice versa.

Just because it "can" stabilize doesn't mean it likes it or is best suited.

                    No joke!

For any naysayers, I said what I did out of experience with Remington and Tikka rifles and ammo that I have personally used. I also said it is a vast blanket statement, and YMMV. You have to figure out YOUR rifle, and start off by using guidelines, and go from there. There is NO substitute for rolling your own either, but not everyone can do that for various reasons.

Some barrels like free floated some like a little fore end touch.
Try hand loading ..I bet you can get 3/8" or better groups at 100 yards.
All my rifles shoot better than I can now days...10- 15 years ago I was better than my rifles. But still can hit a coke can at 50 yards with my 22 pistols.

True. I just have better luck with it and I also have the same rifle as the OP so just sharing my data.

                          Boyds has 100 wood stocks.

I actually don't disagree with you. Just grouping 1:12 twist with the term "heavier bullets" isn't often seen.
168 isn't really a heavy .308 anyways, and it does shoot well out of a 1:12. Hell, if the 1:11.25 was formulated with he use of 175SMK then 1:12 should sure should shoot 168's.

That said, my 1:11 McGowen loves 168's the best.

1:12's usually shoot 175 SMK's just fine unless you have a 20" barrel or if you are in cold weather or at really low elevation.
