    Encore Rifle

I'm not quite sure where to put this question, it's as much a "CA legal" question as anything else.

I've just had another rifle barrel made for my T/C Encore rifle. The barrel is a 27" long 1" diameter bull barrel in 340 Weatherby - and yes it will have a brake attached. It occurs to me I'd rather use this fairly substantial cartridge on a dedicated frame rather than on the same rifle frame I use for my other 30 or so barrels. In the past I've bought a rifle frame with shoulder stock, but no barrel. Given the new long gun law will I be required to have a barrel attached to this thing to do DROS?

I realize there are ways to get it done if needed, I can ship off my 30 Carbine barrel to the seller before he sends in the frame. I'm just curious regarding "letter of the law".

The reciever is what is DROS'ed not the barrel. You can even DROS the reciever without the stock.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

True, but I'm wondering if we now have to provide caliber on the DROS same as is done with handguns.

It would be listed as "universal" or "multiple". That is the way my Encore pistol reciever was DROS'ed. I then bought barrels online

I have had problems with certain dealers over this in the past. I tried to buy an encore Pistol by PPT and the first dealer we went to wouldn't do the transfer because they were too stupid. We found a more intelligent dealer and did the transfer.

My shooting buddy just told me he tried to transfer a complete AR lower and the dealer they went to said it had to have an upper on it. They left and drove to Tracy Rifle and Pistol and did the transfer.

bottom line is some dealers don't know what they are doing :/

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Actually, my experience with the Encore pistol is what prompted the question. When the single shot exemption kicked in I immediately (as in, the 1st day possible) bought an Encore pistol frame, got it from Reeds when they were on Alum Rock. "Does he have to buy it with a barrel?" came up and the consensus then was no - so off I went with the frame, no barrel. On subsequent pistol frame buys the FFL required a barrel to be attached. I have plenty of barrels, wasn't a problem.

IIRC posting the "barrel needed?" question here on handguns resulted in most saying it was required - I doubt I can find the thread now.

I suppose being prepared either way is the best approach.

When Encore frames leave the factory they are designated by Thompson Center as either a rifle or handgun. In Ca you are not supposed to register a rifle as a handgun. A competent Gun Store will call TC and verify the serial number and DROS accordingly. However most wont transfer one without a stock/grip and rifle/pistol barrel installed. I have even been told by certain FFL's they would DROS a rifle frame as a pistol if I brought it in a pistol configuration lol. Lots of FUD surrounding Encores and Contenders unfortunately.

Contenders and Encores are a problem for some shops, I have no idea why. They don't know what they are doing and therefor can't provide an answer why they wont do a sale or a transfer. The easiest way is to find a shop that is comfortable with the guns and just buy a complete rifle and then sell off the barrel if it's something you don't want. What a pain but it works in this wacky state.

This may come as strange to some but , Why do you only have 1 frame ?

I have dedicated pistol frames and dedicated rifle frames. This way if ever asked , and I have never been questioned about it , I can say I can have one of either without being in trouble for an SBR.

You can build a rifle from a pistol frame Just avoid having pistol barrel with shoulder stock ( SBR).

Just find which ever is cheaper pistol or rifle , add shoulder stock ( if necessary) and have at it.

At least it gives you an excuse to buy another.
