    Remy 783 Feeding Problem

Bought a Remington 783 in .270 to get back into the bolty game without breaking the bank. So far I'm really happy with what I got for the price, but I have a little problem with it feeding rounds from the magazine. The second round never wants to feed because the bolt face isn't catching it when moving forward. The fourth round in the same side of the mag feeds without issue. Any suggestions? I was thinking about buying another magazine anyways and seeing if that solved the problem, but I'd like to have this one working too. The ammo I was using was Remington Core-Lokt 130 gr SP. Thanks for the help!

It sure sounds like a mag issue. I'd call Remington and see if they will send you a replacement.

I'll give them a call on Monday then, see what I can find out. Thanks for the tip.

Remington sent me a new magazine but that didn't solve the problem. Their support staff also suggested that if the action was bolted too tightly to the stock that this could also cause the problem. I messed around with different tensions but the problem remained. Any other suggestions? I'm about ready to take one of the mags apart and see if I can't figure something out.

It's always the 2nd round only, and how often does this occur?

I assume you are setting the 2nd round aside and trying a fresh round to see if it repeats?

Its occurring nine out of ten times I load the magazine and always just the second round. Either it will push the round half way out and jam or just slide over it completely without catching.

            And your assumption is correct.

I've also thought about picking up a different brand of ammo but I'm less than optimistic that it would truly make a difference.

I don't think it is an ammo problem. It is a cheap gun problem. I have seen some of these entry level guns do stuff like this all the time and its why I spend a little more and cry once when I purchase it, not when that buck runs away from me when I am farting with trying to chamber a second round. Once in awhile you can hold pressure up on the magazine while shoving that bolt forward, not like a girlie, and get it to function properly. Sometimes they like to be handled a bit rough, because after all, they were rough guns and the details were not done. Want to make it a nicer gun, then start taking things apart, like that bolt and polishing it. Should run nice and smooth and when you open the bolt, it should fall back on its own. Sometimes the lips on the mags need to be re-wrked and polished as well. Anyway, if the problem persists, show it to a gunsmith or send it back to Remington and play that game. Next time buy a Tikka.

I played around with the magazine spring a little with mixed results, still not entirely solving the problem but I think this is a step in the right direction. Generally I have been able to apply pressure to the base of the magazine and that will often allow the round to catch. I might try shimming the spring or something along those lines as well.

I used to run a Remy 700 in .308 that I had dropped into a McRee Chassis: with optics, mags, and the whole shebang I was into it for around $1800. Now I know that's small in the long range world, but that was a lot for me. Problem was, I didn't get the chance to shoot it enough to justify the cost in my mind. I sold it as a starving student to fund a different project, but regretted it ever since. The point of this rifle was to get back into the game without the big bucks so I could spend more money on ammo and my other guns. The 783 fit that bill and I got it loaded out for less than a Tikka out of the box. Not to say I still don't want a Tikka, but I've actually been really impressed by the features and performance on the 783 especially considering the cost. The bolt is plenty smooth, the trigger great, and I got better groupings day 1 with a caliber I am unfamiliar with, than I ever did with the 700. I suggest you give one a try before you start blocking it with every other entry priced rifle. If a little bit finicky magazine is the worst and only thing I've had to deal with for the price, then I still feel I got one hell of a deal. Its a great little shooter, and I don't regret the decision to put money down because that's what I was looking for.

Take the mag apart and check inside.. Look for any rough spots and file or dremel smooth... Also file or smooth follower and take off sharp edges... Follower might just have a rough spot in the mag body on the second round area... Good luck... Cheers...

I have a Remington 783 and I love mine. This is the first time I hear of any feeding issues with this gun. I cycles through mines smoothly. Know anyone with one close to you to compare things?

I'll have a closer look at the follower for problems, see if there are any rough spots.

And unfortunately no, my shooting buddies are in the Savage and Ruger camps lol.

I to have a 783 and never had any issues at all. Great rifle!

The same here, this issue seems to be happening quite a bit.
