New 5R Range Report with pics

Took the .308 Remington 700 5R out for the first time today. Got a 300wm 5R too but that one will have to wait as I don't have a scope for it.

Put it in an AICS 1.5. Took a little getting used to, the thumbhole is comfortable but just different from what I'm used to so I had to try different hand placement a couple of times. Having magazines it freaking awesome especially since I'm a lefty so top loading is annoying because I usually have to break from the rifle. It's got a 30moa Badger base with Vortex PST on it. The scope came from my old 700 and is perfectly functional within what a .308 can do. Wasn't super crazy about the trigger, it was smooth but a bit heavy, it's adjustable so I'll have to play with it.

Check out muzzle blast pattern in the sand...

Top group was the first group I shot. It's five rounds all touching except for the first shot. The horizontal string is primarily because I had an orange sticker for point of aim but the second round pushed it through the target so I ended up aiming at the edges of the bullet holes as I could see the yellow easily from 100yds.

The bottom group was shot with my Magnetospeed attached to the barrel. This is a 7 round group. This was my old 700s pet load and I already had 70 rounds ready to g before I got the 5R so I figured I'd see how it performed, and it did really well. Will definitely keep this load:
    168gr SMK
    42.5gr TAC
    CCI BR2
    Lapua brass
    OAL 2.805"
    2685fps SD10 ES 22

Did some load development with 175gr Nosler CC and Varget. I have to say this rifle is accurate and once I get used to the stock and trigger more we'll be looking even better

Decided to go long a little bit. Shot this at 935ish yards. This was 5 rounds with 4 hits. Group was pretty ugly because I was alone so no spotter and I couldn't hear the feed back from the target so I though I was missing and made adjustments.

View from the target to shooting spot. Arrow points to be car.

Jealous! How far down the tracks did you go to get that distance? That shot up propane tank made me cringe.

That's some nerve to walk out that far. I stopped by that area for the first time over New Years and looks like a fun place to shoot.

The first area where shooting is allowed, if you go up the hill far enough you can get over a mile.

Christmas season must've been busy out there because there was so much crap. I'll have to take my truck next time to haul some stuff.

I only go out midweek and today was the first time since summer I've seen anyone out there. Normally I ask people to cease fire and tell them I'll let them shoot at the target all they want....they never get it anyway

It sounds like an AICS is not for you.
If you don't instantly LOVE it, it's probably not the right stock for you.
I recommend you get a more traditional stock as you will likely be happier with it.
The other thing is to try some Viperskins on your AICS.
Maybe that will fix the thumb-hole problem for you.

Weekends are a no go for me unfortunately, but when there's a clean up I can definitely do some prep work for you guys and pile up what I can't take

Yes I am planning to do the viperskins since I've got plenty of time behind ARs so pistol grip should be more familiar. If that still doesn't make me happy I'll go the manners with chassis route.

If you didn't get pressure signs at 44.7, try 45.0gn of varget with a 175gn SMK.

A lot of the guys running 5Rs used that load and got good results.

At least you are open to change.
So many guys buy an AICS and then are miserable with it and won't get rid of it because they feel like they have to stick with it to justify their purchase...
                        Thumbhole stocks are very polarizing.
You either love them or hate them.
                        There's not much in between.
I tried one and hated it so I got rid of it.

I was running 175 Nosler CC, but no I wasn't getting pressure signs.

I'm always open to change out parts to make me shoot better. But I definitely didn't hate it. I will give this stock a chance, at least want to see if I can get used to it. Muscle memory and all. If not I won't hesitate to get the T4

I've tried AICS, AX, DTA SRS, and the Mcree. I disliked all of them. They just never felt right. I'm with you on this one.
