    Sako TRG22 muzzle brake installation

I am having some trouble installing the Sako brake on the TRG. There is a 4mm allen set screw, and a small flat head screw on top.

The included instructions state to hand tighten the brake, then unscrew it until indexed, and tighten the 4mm allen set screw. If I hand tighten the brake, the small flat head is opposite the little groove on the top of the barrel (6 o'clock position.) I then unscrew the brake until it's indexed with the small flat head on top, and I tighten the allen screw. Once that's tight, the brake still spins freely.

What am I missing? I assume the small flat head screw should set into the groove and be tightened, but if I hand tighten the brake, the flat head is not far enough down to even be in the groove. Does it just get tightened onto the threads, and then tighten the allen screw? TIA

Hmm . . . not sure which brake you have, but I think that the small flat head screw is not to tighten the brake, it is for a mirage band, so it should be on top, aligned with the groove but it is not to hold the brake. It sounds like maybe the flat head screw and the Allen screw are switched into each other's hole?

That process should be correct. You want to line it up, then tighten the allen. That should be all you need. You may not be tightening it enough, but refer to the manual and use a torque wrench to be safe.

The screw is for a mirage band. You can screw it in, but it won't tighten the brake, and it should not be going in over the threads. It screws in behind the threads if you have the brake screwed in all the way.

Thanks for the advice guys. I may just not be getting the allen tight enough. I'll get a torque wrench and give it a try. Anyone know the ft/lbs offhand?

It should be in the instructions that came with the brake. IIRC it's 85 inch pounds. You may not want to go that tight as it should be sufficient once it's tight enough for your satisfaction. But, if you max out the torque, and it still isn't tight, then you have some other issue.

85 inch pounds is about right for a 5/16" or 8mm bolt.
I'm not sure what size bolt he is tightening though...
