It bugs me that most bolt action rifles don't come with iron sights.

Just seems like it wouldn't cost more than $5 on the factory line to install a decent set of sights or at least tap in holes for easy installation of 'accessory' sights.

I'd want at least the rear sights to be able to be removed and reinstalled easy and hold zero.

I really don't want to have to take a new rifle to some local gunsmith and hope he doesn't screw up and pay lots of money.

Leave out the factory installed sling attachment points(seems like that would be something anyone could do "custom" and to 'body size' etc), but give me factory tapped holes for iron sight installation and a few choices of OEM front and rear sights.

If nothing else, shooting your new gun with iron sights the 'old fashioned way' just seems like too much fun for what should be cheap.

Like even if you know your gonna want the car with A/T, you know you'd want to at least learn and try driving a stick.

Supply and demand. Most people who buy centerfire bolt action guns mount a scope on them. The only centerfire bolt guns that I have that have iron sights are my dangerous game rifles for an emergency back up.

Hardly anyone wants 'em, so hardly anyone is going to make 'em, because they don't sell.

If you look at older bolt rifles like the C&R guns, they all have sights. But, bolt rifles are typically used to shoot at decent distances, which modern optics have provided a significant enhancement to. If you are looking to shoot 1,000 yards, it would be very difficult with iron sights. Plus, many of the higher energy cartridges will be used with a muzzle brake, which can, but not always, interfere with the front sight.

However, there are still many bolt rifles available with iron sights. Sticking with centerfire bolt rifles, here are some common manufacturers:

          CZ

          Sako

          Savage

          Ruger

          Browning

ETA: I'll go without $5 sights.

            Sling > irons.

I agree, and if for nothing else they provide a backup to a scope in case it gets damaged. .
For me, if it doesn't have iron sights, I don't want it.
For this reason, I went with the Ruger GSR . And some day will add the Ruger Guide gun, both have irons included.

There are some options out there, you just have to know the model.

There are still a few, and all of the older Winchesters and Remingtons had them. Look around and oh yeah welcome to the new generation of a tacticool world.

Remington(has at least 1, BDL I think?), Tikka(don't think the battue is imported), and blaser(LOL $5k+) also have models with irons. But yeah, they're going to be something you need to order, not just something you'd walk into a shop and buy off the shelf.

Or... you find a competent smith who can install whatever sights you want on whatever rifle you want instead of waiting who knows how long for a special order(then again, the smith might take forever too) and not be limited to the small number of models that come with them from the factory.

Seems like more of a European thing? I know the CZ ones without the sights are called the American.

Who buys rifles off the shelf these days in CA? The brick and mortar stores in my area don't have anything except a hunk of overpriced junk. I'd rather walk barefoot across a bed of hot coals than to go into most of the LGSs.

Got my Minox 2-10 mounted as low as she can go.

Why did I ever use 3-9's?
