    Which Remington 700?

I know, I know.....I can not find anything solid.

What hell is up with all these 700's? I'm looking into a SPS tactical or SPS tactical aac-sd. What's the difference besides the twist?

I'm looking to hit paper and steel targets at the longest range I can find (at the moment 500yds, might be 800yds later).

    20"? 24? 1/10? 1/12?

Any recommendations? Any help would be appreciated.

The 1:12 will shoot the heavies just as well as the 1:10. The extra length gives you another 100+/- FPS for bucking the wind at the 800+ yard mark. The Sierra Match King 175 is a generic pet load for the Rem SPS-V.

SPS Tactical AAC in 223 has a heavy 16.5" barrel with 1-9 twist, with a threaded muzzle.

I'm sorry, it's going to be in 308.

Get a 26" barrel if you want to shoot 800yd and beyond.
A 20" barrel is fine if you don't intend to shoot much past 400yds.

20" barrel is only good for 400yd? Isn't that ar15 territory?

                  Yes.
If you are looking for the BEST precision, longer barrels give more velocity which helps you in the wind beyond 400yds.
If you are just banging 4+moa steel, the short barrels are just fine and many people will be here shortly to tell you that you only need a 20" barrel for shooting 1100yds.

You can ignore the guys that actually shoot 1000yds or run precision rifle matches and new precision rifle shooter clinics because those guys probably don't know as much as all the internet commandos who will link you to Frank's video or Tac-Ops magazine article.

It is all dependent on wind and where you are firing. A 20'' is more precise but the lack of velocity at long ranges and the subsequent greater effect the wind has made people think it's less accurate. 400 yards is a huge underestimation for a 20'' barrel though.

I have seen 24'' barrels get shot out and had them cut down to 20'' and still held solid groups at 700-800 yards. It's all the shooter and the atmospherics of where he is shooting.

Just to clarify I do agree a longer barrel overall is better at longer ranges*

                        I'm working to a 1/2moa accuracy requirement.

What an actual shooter is trying to tell you is that you have already limited yourself by going with the 308 so given your poor cartridge selection atleast use as much barrel length as is possible so you don't hurt your cartridge selection anymore.

You won't find a single 308 at a 1,000 yard Benchrest match because past 600 yards you are giving too much away ballistically.

                            A 6BR would be a better choice

Amen to that! And you can't even find them all on the Remington website.

My R700 5R milspec in 308 is getting out of jail on Monday. I'd say get one of those but I haven't even shot the thing yet.
