My new Marlin 336

So I impulse purchased the above and while it was in jail had the shop smith smooth out the action and lighten the trigger a bit.

When I went to get it he was still ranting about how "unfinished" it really was. This was manufactured after the Remmington purchase and is being done with new tooling.
The difference in feel was remarkable and I was itching to shoot it.
Fast forward a couple of weeks. 30-30 is as hard to find on a shelf as .22
I missed that memo.
I reload so I'll be ok long run but I sure would like to just plink a tad.
It came with a hammer extension in case you put glass on it.
Now let me be clear, I need glass. Eyes getting old. My thoughts are that a lever gun is supposed to be fired at bad guys from a galloping horse. Glass? Really?
Am I missing something here?
Really looking forward to shooting this thing.

Awesome gun you'll be happy I picked one up a month ago and love it really need to get a trigger job though how much they charge to clean it up if you don't mind me asking?

Is that Marlin a top-ejecting? Or is it side, or angle-out-the-top ejecting? Can't really scope a top-ejecting lever gun. Efforts in the past led to offset scope mounts and then dealing with the add'l parallax.

Yes, [Edit: an older-] .30-30 lever gun is really a +/- 100 yard shooter. I just picked up a 1922-made Winchester Model 1894 saddle-ring carbine chambered in the same round. I can only hope to hit the 200-yd steels at my regional outdoor range, but I'll be sharpshootin' paper at 50 and 100.

LAX Firing Range in Los Angeles has an online ammo sales site. They have .30-30 Win Super X, but the 150-grain bullets. Them thar'z gewnna kick lahck a mule.

Take a look at Williams peep sights, I have three Marlins and have Williams FP on all of them. BTW I see 30-30 at Walmart all the time.

Thanks to all for the info.
It ejects out the side. Up a tad but it wouldn't be an issue.
Got to shoot it today and won't be addin' any glass to this baby.
Will check out the peep sights.

Now with the William's peep sight would we(I'm in the same boat, I pick mine up tomorrow) have to change the front sight post? I found said rear site at brownells for$40. Not bad, seen worse. Thanks all...

Pauliedad, thanks for the compliment... funny, someone recommended a Lyman peepsight for my gun... I love the Williams but the Lyman may have a more period-appropriate look. Who knows... I suppose I'm splitting hairs at this point appearance-wise... hahaha... but on second thought, isn't that what we're trying to do? Split hairs?! HEE!


I'd like to near-bullseye regularly at 100 yds with this. I can with similar calibers and iron sights, but as you've noted, our eyesight! may be on the wane... ehh. argh.

@200Apples - first of all, thank you for noticing. I'm honored to say Grandfather's mint Colt gold cup 70 series(best blueing I've ever seen in my life). W/ original box And receipt from believe it or not Gemco. The receipt is BARELY eligible, so I could be mistaken. But... that's what my "gma" remembers/thinks. She wasn't too sure.
Since my grandfather's passing in 2003 I've cleaned it(it was COMPLETELY mechanically LOCKED UP)-shot it(rides like Cadillac)-and cleaned again for storage. It fit my hand like it was made for it. Sights were Dead accurate and 15 yards. Popped open Pepsi cans with ease... Adjustable trigger that he set, as I remember as a kid; was like glass.

I remember him takin it every where. Always in a red felt gun case. Yellowstone, Disney world, Mexico, Canada. That thing went every where. Loaded and under the seat. All those years and not 1 scratch. No bs. Always brought, rarely shot.

RIP Frank A Mereno, marine and inspiration to many. Your legacy lives in me.

SBsaquatch, I love to hear stories like yours about your grandfather's gear.
Funny, I feel that way about my Springfield Loaded 1911 A1... (some jaquads will call it a "copy" - whatever) almost a feeling of reverence for it. Thanks for the reply.

No apology needed. The spontaneous conversation is why I'm here.
I've learned tons by reading the posts. Some wasted time too but FUD has a smell or tone to it.

Next time I get a chance I'm going to line up 6 cans on a log and see how I do cycling the lever with speed and accuracy in mind. Just seems like a cool drill.

I've put Skinner sights on all of my Marlins. They're very nice sights, and the owner (it's a small company) is great to do business with.

They've all required replacing the front sight, so I'd go to the range, do a days worth of shooting, and then swap sights before putting the last six rounds on fresh paper. Go home, do a little math, order a FO sight at the right height from Brownell's, and be ready to shoot again by the next weekend.

Marlin bought by Remington/Cerberus - Freedom, the parent corp has been for sale since Sandy Hook - would you expect continuity, further disruption, or annihilation with another ownership change? Worst case, divisions or even the whole operation closes, patents sold, no new parts

WWG custom Marlingtons - they used to produce a killer quality custom job, but A&E and growing pains really make them look like idiots behind the gun counter - not so sure they are to be trusted right now either - wish I had never seen the TV show

Maybe pre-2008 Marlins take on the same premium as pre-'64 Winchester bolt guns?

Maybe I win one in the raffle. Or drinking beyond capacity gets me into that Rob Ford frame of mind to impulse buy one of their new production lever guns. But short of that I'd hope good judgment would stop me.

Gotta love the 336, new ones are nice if you can cherry pick them.

A lot of guys like the Skinner Sights, me included. As for a trigger job the WWG Happy Trigger is sweet at $89.00.

I've been on MO for a few years, it seems only a quarter of the people on there have valid QC claims the rest drink the kool-aid.
