yeah I guess new shooters will just have to buy their own guns LOL

      Answer:

      243

Carries much further than 223, buck wind better than 308. 223 cannot hunt deer in many states. Illegal.

243, like the 270, shoot flatter than it's parent cartridge, the 308, and 30-06 respectively.

Can kill Varmints to deer. 69 grains to 110.

I got back into shooting .223 because I thought I'd save money over feeding my M1A but it's not really working out. Now I use it between .308 sessions to take a "break" but still keep on shooting. You know?

Saving roughly $0.30 a round vs .308 has me shooting a practicing with .223 more often...depending on how expensive the setup you want, you would have to shoot around 1000-2000 rounds to get close to breaking even...I don't look at the initial rifle purchase as part of the equation though..just an excuse to tell my wife I'm gonna save some money...

Take look at the Ruger M77 "Predator" in 223. The reviews say this rifle is extremely accurate and I love the look.

Some don't like the green/brown laminated stock, but I think it looks great.

ya i understand that i do enjoy the bolt action. one thing that you can do with a mini is get the adjustable gas block and turn off the gas pressure to it making it a non semi auto "bolt action" as some would call it. as for a strictly bolt action im not sure that .223 would be the way i would go there are so many other calibers that are much more interesting to use in a bolt only gun

What about a 30BR? You can run lighter bullets than you run in the .308, less recoil, doesn't burn up barrels and you use the same powder as you use in the .308. You can also run the light 30BR bullets in the .308 if you feel like it.

I really like the 6BR, but none of the components cross over, but also not a barrel burner.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

Besides cheaper ammo.. a big reason why a bolt action in 223 would appeal to me is if you never intend to shoot past 600 yards and mostly around 300 yards. 223 would allow you to practice dealing with windage, etc at a closer range vs something like a 308.

Also the reality of it is.. majority of the shooters I know in CA don't hunt. So having a bigger caliber would mostly be just for fun (I love shooting big bullets or higher recoil rounds).

Lower bullet costs of 6mm cartridges make the cost-of-use about identical between 6mm and 6.5mm cartridges.
6mm's wear out barrels faster, but recoil less.
6.5mm's last longer and recoil more.

You don't HAVE to wear out the 308 barrel before you rebuild the gun.
I have rebuilt LOTS of rifles with only 300-500 rounds through the original 308 barrel.
Just get a PTG one piece 0.703" diameter bolt and a barrel blank ordered so you are ready once they come in...

The biggest problem with .223 bolt guns is that they are handicapped by the twist rate, it's hard to find one with a twist faster than 1/9. I bought a Howa 1500 varmint a few years ago cheap, I didn't realize at the time it was a 1/12...
I still love to shoot it, 52-53gr bullets go into little ragged hole groups a bit over 1/2 moa consistently and you can shoot it all day long.
