First hunting rifle: Did i do good?

Jailed a Ruger American .270 last week at Turners. Came with a Burris Fullfield II and Leupold rings for $399. Not too crazy about the digi cam blue, but I figured a $5 rattle can job could fix that. What say you calguns did I do good for a first hunting rifle? Don't plan on doing any exotic hunting, just want to tag along with fellas on the next deer/hog hunt.

BTW it's my first bolt gun.

Great caliber, very versatile, capable of taking anything with the exception of the larger bears of the north country. I do believe the stock is not the ugliest one i've seen, so give it time.

A couple months ago, I picked up used LH 700 BDL, with a cheap 4x on it, in .270 for $450. I can't wait to see how it performs with some handloads. I'm thinking that I'll like the .270 cartridge a lot once I get it into the field.

            OP, do the following.

            1. Sight it in.
            2. Go hunt a hog.
            3. Calguns BBQ!

Rifle wise you did just fine.

I think you'll really like it. I have the Ruger American .270 with the black stock and a Nikon Prostaff 4-12X40 and I love mine. Plus, .270 is pretty much in stock everywhere, including Walmart.

I think .270 is awesome and Rugers are one of the best values out there. Pick a bullet weight you like and look up the trajectory over at chuck hawkes websight. For 150 gr. I believe you can sight in at 180 yds. and never be more than 1.5'' off target out to about 300 yds. This means for most hunting distances you can just put the cross hairs on the kill spot and pull the trigger. You may need to adjust for extremely close shots as well as up and down hill shots. This is true with any caliber and zero distance though and .270 shoots so flat it'll take a lot of the calculating out.

Go buy some ammo and shoot that gun! Also nice to know you can go to any gun shop and find ammo too.

One of the great old calibers. First high-power rifle I ever bought was .270 and it's served me well. Within 500 meters, .270 Win 130 gr has virtually the same ballistic trajectory as 180 gr .300 Win Mag -- come ups are roughly 2, 2, 2, 3 from 100 to 500 meters.

In terms of practical hunting accuracy, it means that for a 12" diameter target area, within 300 meters you need make no elevation adjustment. Zero it at 100 meters and then come up 2 MOA (so you're hitting 2" high at 100 meters), and you're all set.

Bullet selection is limited for long-distance paper-punching. But if you reload, there's more interest in this caliber than there used to be.

The F2F II is a good hunting scope. Nice job not over thinking it.
