Mosin Nagant Mod- Opinions Needed Please

Hello Fellow Calgunners,

A few months back I bought up an old Mosin from a pawn shop for 89 bucks as all of my other shooting buddies were picking them up. Well I take it out to the desert for some long range shooting and the thing shoots so high that it is impossible to get anywhere near the target without major compensation.

I then decide to possibly put a scope on it and have researched all of the possible options for mounting etc.

This is where i stumbled onto the fact that the rifle i bought was a Spanish Civil War rifle and the reason it shoots high is the Spaniards replaced the globe sight with a blade sight but never added the needed riser. Thus it shoots high.

So, seeing as it is a bit more rare than a normal Mosin, (which ain't saying much) and has a lot of history, do I leave it be and have a collectible or should i add the scope and mount and get it shooting accurately? I was leaning towards the JMECK scope so I don't have to drill or tap and can leave it fairly original.

What would you all do? Any opinions greatly appreciated.

It has the sanded stock, blade front sight, no import marks, non pinned rear sight, screwed in estuncheons for the sling, and the year 1937 and the serial number are spot on for the time period as well.

Just the rear sight would be cool to see. Sorry, but I have never heard of such a rifle. Would be neat to see.

No worries Gutz. Check this link for more info. These mosin's are supposedly an 8 out of 10 on the rare factor which is why i am hesitant to mess with it.

Seriously, you don't wanna mess with it. I'd get another Mosin, run of the mill ones, and modify that.

I'm leaning towards leaving it alone. A shame though as I wanted a cheap shooter to mess around with my buds. Have many other projects on the books and buying another mosin ain't one of them.

Switching the front sight out would be easy and you would always have the original. A taller front sight would lower your point of aim. $89 was a total steal.

There are kits that allow you to mount a scope on the rear sight. You just push the pin out and you can put it back to original anytime without damaging it at all. I mounted one of the kits on a mosin and it works great. Save your original parts and you can put it back.

Is this the front sight you have?

My nagant front site is shrouded, and pin type, I used Heat shrink to raise the front site to correct elevation. It can always be taken off. As for scopes I had a pu, didn't care much for it and sold it. Only thing i had to change was bolt handle, I got a bent one now

If it is a SCW Mosin, leave it alone or sell it. There are plenty of $100 Mosins out there to bubba.
