Bolt knobs, what's the deal?

Seems to me everybody gets a cool bolt knob upgrade on their rifles.
I dont get it, is there a problem with the regular knob? I dont seem to ever have an issue operating my bolt with the factory knob. However, it seems like 99 % of the nice rifles have an aftermarket knob installed.
I like the looks of the oversized knob. Looks cool. Is it just the looks deal, or is there actually another reason to change it from the factory to the aftermarket?

Makes it much easier to grab in a hurry. Also provide more leverage to open and close the bolt.

Some are for general purpose, ease of use,better feel or grip, added leverage though this one is kinda lame. But most are just for tacticool looks.

Sometimes it helps clear your scope. I wouldn't mind a little longer bolt handle on my CZ.

Also takes up more room in the safe and forces you to pull the bolts.

I have a 700 Police with a Badger Ordinance bolt knob extension. It runs a lot smoother with the aftermarket knob. I don't shoot competitions but it was a comfort thing for me. I recommend it if you have the money. It just depends on what you are comfortable using.

OP - have you shot a rifle with a bolt knob extension?

It's not that there is anything wrong with the factory bolt knob, but for me it's a little easier to grab and a little easier to manipulate the bolt. It also is helps velar my scope.

Not yet. I was planning on getting one, and then had to stop and ask why. Sounds like there are some good reasons to get one.

+1 on the KRG Bolt Lift. It made managing the bolt on my 700 SPS Varmint a pleasure - the factory knob is small and more difficult to grab. With the KRG lift, it's now very comfortable and easy to rack now. It also doesn't conduct temperature like metal knobs do. I like the fact it can easily be undone. Takes about 5 min to install and is incredibly solid - high quality materials. $28 plus shipping.

I have a KRG one because I got tired of knocking my knuckles on my scope/rings. It's a good addition to your gun if you use it a lot. It just sort of opens up your cockpit a little and doesn't cost a lot.
