    On order!

Well, it's time to get another long gun before the brave new year kicks in.

I've got a .308 Savage model 10 Precision Carbine in jail, should be picking that up on or about the 6th. This will be my first Savage centerfire.

I don't have a scope on hand that I like for this gun so I went with the SWFA SS 10X42M scope. Fixed 10 power mil/mil, side focus and it will sit on a 20MOA base. These scopes are made in Japan and have rave reviews for the price point. I figured the fixed 10 will be all I need for quite a while on this rifle.

I picked up a few boxes of a variety of factory ammo to get started and see what it likes. With the 20" barrel and 1:10 twist I'm expecting to be loading 168gr loads for it, but we'll see.

So who got some time behind this rifle and or scope? All looks good in my research, any known issues that I missed? Anyone handloading for this rifle that would like to share some results?

Once I get it out to shoot I'll post up a little review.

Doug, SWFA had a black friday sale on the 3-15s for 562.00. I think you should have gotten that model. Both are good starters though.

I was looking hard at the 3-15, it would be much more versatile. I was sort of indecisive as I've been spending a lot of money lately. I didn't see that it was on sale though, that might have swayed me. The 10 power was on sale for $329, so I'll survive...

May have better luck with 175gr. The 168 gr tends to shoot better out of 1:12 barrels, but you never know until you try.

You should be able to get by with Low rings, depending on brand. Try to keep the scope as close to the barrel as you can, it will give you a better cheekweld. Be aware that the large cam-piece thing on the Savage bolt can interfere with the eyepiece on some scopes (Nikon M308 comes to mind), so that may dictate ring height. I can get my 50mm Sightron closer to the barrel than the 44mm Nikon just because of the difference in eyepiece diameter.

Did you get the model with threaded barrel? The originals had none, but my June purchase had threads, so you can get a nice brake if you want. I chose a PRI Quiet Control brake. Not very 'quiet,' but I like it.

Magazines were about $45 on Midway last I checked, only 4-rnd available. With the bolt release in front of the trigger guard, I have yet to find an appropriate aftermarket bottom metal for AICS mags. Same goes for stocks, but I don't know how different the inletting is.

        Obligatory pic of cluttered reloading/workbench:
        This is my sig line.

Good info DarkHorse, thanks. I've considered that the 175's will be best, as you say I'll just have to try 'em out and see. No 175's among the factory ammo I was able to get so far.

I already have low rings coming, the math say's I'll have plenty of room for this scope, probably more than I like as I try to get the scope as low as I can.

All the current ones are threaded, I had to order the rifle so I haven't even seen it yet!

On the mags, I figure I'l get a spare 4 rounder, and one or two of the rather expensive but consistently on backorder 10 rounders here: Darkeagle Custom.

How's the stock working for you so far?
