    BLM fun today 300-963yds

Nice day out in the boonies, figure I'd share. Last time I went out I misjudged how quickly it got dark and ended up not being able to find my steel target. Luckily it was still there this morning, two weeks later, it was out at about 1k from where people normally shoot so I wasn't super concerned. But I would have been bummed because its pricey to replace.

Got there a bit late today because of slow drivers when going through the mountains to get to the desert. Temp 77f, wind was decent at 5mph. Did some data gathering with temps dropping from the summer. Shot at 300, 400, 600, 800, 963. Didn't walk back to spray paint the targets from 800 and 963, because I was running out of light again. hence the two groups (or lack thereof). I shot one sighter on target, adjusted, then shot a 4 round group. When I started at 600 the wind really kicked up halfway between me and the target, it was around 9mph at my position and 16-18mph at the target. It was also really gusty which made me realize that despite practicing a ton the last couple of years I still have ways to go. And it sucks to shoot long range alone without anyone spotting your rounds. Wasted about 10 rounds shooting into the hillside to get dialed in at 800 yds.

Either way it was a fun day.

    Shooting 168gr NOS CC over 42.5gr TAC @ 2640fps, out of a R700 26" 1-12".

Target is 12" wide, 19" tall

    Temp 77
    Hum 35%
    Wind 5-18mph throughout the day
    Press 29.62
    Alt 125ft

    The rifle...

    300yds

    400yds

    600yds

800yds on the right side (wind died a bit), 963yds on left side (wind picked up again) missed 2 of 5

This guy scared the crap out of me crawling right onto my arm while shooting

Where in the desert do you go? I'm in the Mojave desert and there are plenty of places to shoot out here and I'm always looking for someone to shoot long range with because most of my buddies just like shooting ARs, which is fun but its not long range precision.

You forgot to practice your 5 yard engagment(s) on that 8-legged demon.

It's east of SD, I'd definitely like to check out Mojave some time. Main issue for me is that I work weekends which often makes it tough to meet up for shoots. Feel the same way about AR's right, I've done enough ready ups for a lifetime

Honestly, I considered it. I was angry that the bastard made me yelp like a little girl...but realized that's my problem so I let him pass. I am curious was kind of spider it is.

I'm free during the week quite a bit because with my job my schedule rotates. I sometimes prefer to go out in the desert where no one will bother me.

I've been looking into joining one of the NCPPRC practice days in the next few months. I just would like a BLM place I know I can go with the whole family too.

That sounds like a great day in the desert.

For longer range targets, I usually put a waypoint in my phone gps to help during retrieval time. Even during the day it can be difficult to find if you can't maintain line-of-sight for the whole walk out to the target.

Nice. I have not been out in quite a while.
