Bolt Action .223

I'm looking to get a bolt action rifle in .223. Preferably with a 20-22 inch barrel and weighing less than 7 lbs. without scope and ammo.

All of the Remington rifles have a 1/12 twist and would limit me to 55 grain and lower ammo. I looked at the Savage and they have a 1/9 twist.

My AR's are 1/7-1/9 and my mini-14 is 1/9. Why would I want a 1/12 twist rate.

The rifle that fits my bill is the Savage 11/111 Lightweight Hunter.

Any suggestions?

Remington R5 milspec 223 has heavy barrel and a 1 in 9 twist.
Go look it up.

Just bought a Savage Model 11 Hog Hunter and very happy so far but only have about 100 rounds through it. Accutrigger, 1/9, 7.25lbs, etc... Factory stock isn't great, but action is very nice and I like trigger.
That said, kinda wish I would have checked out the Mossberg MVP Patrol.

My Tikka has a barrel twist of 1-10. I always shoot 69-72 grain bullets for longer distance targets. Rifle shoots every bullet weight starting at 40 grains. Great for Yote hunting and other varmints!

Here's my Tikka t3 lite in 223

+1 on the Tikka lite. These now come in 1/10 twist which can stabilize up to 69 grain pills. Just as a side note, Lapua uses the 1/10 twist for their 69 grain accuracy testing.

Hunting/Varmint bolt 223 rifles do not tend to come in any faster twist than 1/9 since they want a twist that caters to a wide range of bullets (40 grains+). If you look for target guns (Savage offers these), you can find the faster 1/7 twist barrels, but these are much heavier.

I bought a Tikka Varmint (heavier than 7 lbs) in 223 a few months ago and the action is really slick. Trigger is also incredible for being bone stock. Can adjust down to 2 lbs from factory with hex key. The synthetic stock is also stiff enough and usable. Well worth the few extra bucks over a Remington/Savage.

Why not just stick a 1:9 or 1:7 on a Remington 700?

My 700P .223 has a 1:9 -- a 1:8 or 1:7.5 would really be the barrel to have, I think.

I am thinking of pulling my barrel and going with something with a slightly faster twist...

I think this will do just fine and it comes with a 9 twist.
