    My budget M40A1 Build.

    Folks,

I have always been interested in the M40 rifle, and its use in the USMC. So, I set aside some funds for my tribute M40A1. I know the M40A1 has a 24 inch barrel, but I have have chosen an SPS tactical as the basis.
I will be using a Bell and Carlson Tactical Medalist 4 Series 1000 stock, Remington BDL steel drop in trigger guard. I have also ordered a Redfield USMC 3x9x40 repop of the AccuRange Scope, although this uses mildots.Red field Junior 1 inch scope mounts.
I have been wanting to this for awhile, I am hoping to set some time with Randall Rauch at AR15Barrels to parkerize the rifle. I will post pics as sson as the build is done. A2

Wait, are you building an M40 or a M40A1?

      M40 (uses the Redfield AccuRange)

      M40A1

Either way both rifles are sexy as hell, and I look forward to your pics/writeup.

I drool at this site. I would really like to do the M70 Hathcock replica, with one of the M40 builds being a close second.

Check out G.A. Precision's M40A1 and see if it is set up the way you want. If you aren't in a hurry to get it, they will build it right. Also check out their scopes and ask for a discount on the scope. They gave me a good a good deal on a Vortex Razor HD EBR-2B for my GAP-10 build. I also have a Crusader built by them with the same scope.

I believe that is a GA Precision in the photo above posted by Leadslinger.

I may be wrong, but I think the early M40A1 was equipped with Redfields.

M40 optic is a Redfield Accu Range 3X9 1" Tube ( Green or Black )

                  M40A1 optic is a Unertl 10X

You may have misunderstood me. I am aware the m40a1 had the Unertl. I stated that the early m40a1's were still being equipped with leftover Redfield scopes from what I have read. But, I could be wrong.

Interesting. And where did you get that info?

I hadn't read about Redfields being used on the fiberglass stocked M40A1 rifles. To my (limited) knowledge, Redfield were used on the wooden stocked Vietnam-era M40 rifles.

I honestly don't remember where I read it, but I'll look around. I definitely not trying to get in a pissing match, as I have no dog in the fight. I just thought it was odd, yet it made sense. I'm sure many firearms went through transitions and were equipped as new parts became available.

I understand that the A1 first had the Redfield Accurange 3-9x and than later the Unertl USMC 10X. I however have a (1998?)SOF magazine article highlighting Thunder Ranch sniper training and two Marine Seargents are highlighted, both with M40a1s. (I'll see if I can find it and scan some fotos)...

"There is no "official" date (at least that I can tell) when the M40 was replaced by the M40A1, but the process happened in the early 70's. The wood stocks were replaced by McMillan fiberglass stocks, which are known for their ruggedness. The entire system is built by USMC armorers at Quantico, VA. The redfield 3-9x scopes were eventually replaced by a specially designed scope built by Unertl to USMC specifications. This happened in the early 80's"
