Checked base screws. Look gtg. Just ordered a timney trigger, and did the DIY trigger job for the time being. Going to head back out to the range and try again tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice and suggestions. Ha, not really sure what exactly the problem was because I did everything last night and went out with some yet another kind of ammo this morning. Grouping still not where id like it. But much better than it was. I was able to get it down to about two inch groups this morning. Better than the 7 or 8+ inch groups it has been getting.

Still, I would get a box of Federal Gold Medal Match or Black Hills Match ammo and see how they group just to get a benchmark. If they shoot like crap, then you still have other issues to investigate.

I have a Savage Model 11 .308 with a Leopold VX-3. It is very accurate. The only difference is mine has the accu-trigger.

check if the barrel is free floated

Check this all so. If you can slip a dollar bill between the stock and barrel from the nose of the stock to the receiver it is good. If you cannot something is touching the barrel and that will effect accuracy.

How does the crown look? If you bought it from a place where they're sitting out and every a__hole and his brother can mess with it some one might have messed it up.

And check this. It will be very obvious if it is damaged. The last thing the bullet touches as it leaves the rifle will have everything to do with were the bullets go.

No, no accutrigger. And youre right its very stiff. I haven't used any match grade ammo. I was trying to get a decent deer/hog rifle and want to zero it using the hunting rounds I would be using. I did buy the rifle from a little mom and pop store that pulled it directly off the shelf and put back in box when I bought it. Checked out and couldn't really notice anything bad on crown. Ill check into the base screws and length. Geez, definitely didn't expect all these issues when I picked this thing up. Heard great stuff about sub moa out of box ha.

I have had good accuracy with most any ammo I load in mine. But I decided to go the next step and loaded my own ammo specific to my rifle. It is about 1 moa at 100 yards when I do it right. I have found that 165 and 168 grain bullets are the most consistent. Heavier bullets to the 180 grain range drop faster and kick harder equalling less accurate shots.

Another problem your rifle may have is your riflings may start farther out than most other rifles. This will cause the bullet to slide over the riflings for a short distance before it starts to spin, affecting accuracy. You can adjust this by hand-loading and increasing the over all length (OAL) of the cartridge. Factory ammo will have a shorter OAL to accommodate all the different types of rifles it could be fired in.

Bear in mind that to get the best accuracy out of any gun you will need to make you own ammo for it. So you will need fire formed brass only fired in that gun. Consistent powder charges to .05 grains. Quality bullets. And an OAL set for that rifle.

They are good guns and there is a logical reason why it is not shooting good for you. Good luck and keep trying.

I have 3 Savage Rifles (all 10's .223, 6.5 Creedmore, and 308) and all shot .75" out of the box with factory ammo.
and with a little tweeking and tailored ammo, they all shoot 1/4" or better
if i do my part, and the gods are with me. I use to be a Rem700 guy, and i got tired of replacing trigger, barrel, and stock, on a new rifle to get it to shoot the way i want. the Savage is a good rifle.

If he was like me, or anyone else is my 111 in .30-06 was a Big5 special that worked fine out of the box but was still cheaper (coupons, gift cards, etc) to put a rifle basix trigger in than to buy one with an accutrigger.

Lol ok, welly fault on the trigger. I read a bunch of reviews of the 11s and they all mentioned they had accutriggers. I didnt dry fire in store when looking at it. I assumed they all had the accutrigger aside from like the axis line models. So just dumbistake on my part, ha I also bought it on impulse one day. But I can live with getting an aftermarket trigger to make smoother pull. Just frustrating to have to mod the entire gun to shoot decent groups. ive kind of just decided I'm going to use the action and replace everything and turn it into a project rifle. Buy another rifle for my hunting rifle.

My 11 308 did 7 inch group during the first trip, turned out savage didn't tight the scope in factory, and scope became free floating, LOL

7" is a pretty wide group, sheesh. I took mine out and was shooting 1.5" groups with rem umc 150. and thats not great ammo too.

Exactly what I have,got mine in 2011. Like I said, good deal at the time coupons that worked with guns and gift cards.

The stock that still comes on the hunter is at most a $50 scope maybe. But if you want a very upgradable rifle that you can strech upgrades over a while like me, that has a solid action it was a great buy. I have since put a Minox scope and Leupold bases on it. Its a great rifle as is.

before you start blindly changing everything, change the ammo - what is the twist rate of the barrel?

when I got my 10FP I was shooting 150gr ammo and could not get it to group at all, 5 or 6" groups at best - switched to 175gr match and got the advertized sub MOA.
