Thinking about installing a muzzle brake.

Thinking about installing a muzzle brake on my Remington 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum. Supposed to help with recoil. Not really sure which one to use, but I do plan on having a gunsmith install it. Will have him thread the barrel and install it. Recoil is not a big issue, but I am trying to be a better shooter and it might help.
I do know some brakes are a bummer to shooters around you. Also, I have heard they can kick up dust if used in the prone position. I plan on shooting off a bench, but would prefer to not have to worry about impacting shooters around me.
Any suggestions on types that have worked well?

Jp enterprises has the best brake around. The Recoil Eliminator reduces magnum loads to around 223 felt recoil. They are side venters so you don't have to worry about dust. All brakes are load and all brakes tend to annoy those to the sides of you, especially in an over Gasser like a 7 Mag!

But totally worth it. I love mine, being able to shoot 100+ rounds of belted magnum in a day without flinching really helped my shooting abilities.

If you plan to shoot prone, I don't think there is any better choice than JP as well. They make great products.

I got a brake for my 300WM from this guy:

I don't know that you can beat the price, and the product looks top notch.

I haven't shot it yet, but if you look around, you will see nothing but good things about his product.

My gunsmith suggested the VAIS, he put it on, and does work well.

You know who to go to..... Whats your barrel profile? Rem varmint, sporter, or #7?

Be mindful of those to people on the sides of you if you put a brake on a large caliber rifle, The pressure hurts ears/eyes even with protection.

Agree with Jetman. Schuler brakes from muzzlebrakesandmore.com are very nice and really cheap.

I hate vais since they have holes all the way around- those kick up dust like crazy in prone.

Any brake that works is LOUD.

The bigger the surface area the more efficient the brake as the gases need something to impinge against in order to work.

If the ports are swept rearward like on a clamshell brake that also improves efficiency.

Holes on the bottom tend to kick up dust and holes on the top tend to raise the cheek piece into your face that is why most brakes with top holes have bottom holes as well.

A large chamber with a rearward facing cone to strip gases away from the bullet works very well also.

"barrel profile? Rem varmint, sporter, or #7?"

It is a sporter. I hope to shoot it out first practising, and then replace it with a heavy barrel.

Old article with some interesting info., recently reposted-

                          Original article-

Vais website, click on all the tabs and enjoy the read. I have several different brakes, including a couple Vais copies, it's effective and reportedly quieter than others. Quiet being a relative term. Since you're shooting from the bench, I wouldn't worry about the bottom holes. If you do decide to go prone on dirt, put a mat under the muzzle or just remove the brake.

Home of the Beast series brakes. We produce some of the most effective muzzle brakes on the market.

Been wanting to see/try one of these: Rat Worx - Big Chubby muzzle brake, looks pretty effective too.

                              Thanks Switchbarrel,
According to the info, the vais brake only increased the noise level a couple DB. I would imagine that the holes going all the way around would reduce the blast affecting the shooters to the side of me.
