I think most of the stuff "tactical" shooters came from BR guys.... I learned how to reload from them, and much much more.

What exactly is...."benchrest" anyway?

I'll stick to my $1k savage that I can get .3 inch groups out of.
Could I get as good of groups as you with your gun? No, but an untrained person would get a **** of a lot closer to your score than an untrained person with a gun on bi-pod vs a person trained with it. I'm sorry but shooting a bench rest rifle is not a shooter intensive skill. It's a feat of engineering and a testament to a person's consistency in reloading but in shooting skill it lags behind other forms.Comment

I put out the bat signal with this thread, and he still hasn't shown up...Originally posted by fighterpilot562Damn it man! We could have got drunk, called a taxi and drop by Kest house with a mega phone.Comment

Unless something specifically piques his interest, you have to say his name 3 times like beetlejuice(I'm not joking, that actually happened in another thread. quotes of posts containing his name don't count, likely has to be done in different posts).Comment

Don't get impatient I had to work all day.
Benchrest actually consists of 85% great guys.
For the other 15% they had to write several rulebooks not just one.
They will read a rule that says all bags must be filled with sand and no metallic substances and fill there bag with Portland sand and water or lead shot.
In between your sighter target which is spotted and your record target which isn't the crew in the pits has 1 minute to get the target up.The vice president of the organization will not open his bolt during this time even though it is mandatory.
Benches must be drawn and poker chips are usually used.If your a bigshot you will trade poker chips with someone else so you can shoot on the first relay even though it is against the rules.
Some benchrest shooters will take there targets home and two weeks later submit them for world record consideration.
Once they move there truck to the line they will never move it again until the match is over even if there are 5 relays and 80 year old men are shooting 90 pound rifles.
There are 983 reasons why there group is too big and none of them are the shooters fault.
If the groups are real good the bedding is bad along with the scope and barrel but the shooter is the best reloader in the world so no big deal.
If you see a benchrest shooter in a terrible panic with fear in his eyes and sweat running off his nose running around flailing his arms that means a piece of Lapua brass is missing or has rolled off the bench.
All benchrest shooters would have won the match except the mirage was bad for them only and not the rest of the shooters on the same relay.
All benchrest shooters have a secret gunsmith who does special stuff but he only does it to there rifle and nobody elses.
All benchrest shooters have the best reamer ever made.
All benchrest shooters have a secret powder charge.
All benchrest shooters have secret bullets that are so good the FBI and Military are always trying to get some.
All benchrest shooters are old fat and extremely grumpy on there best day and on a bad day stand clear of them.
All benchrest shooters show up to a match with atleast 500 pounds of gadgets, gizmos, whirly bobs,doo-dads and the latest and greatest secret weapon.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

In the real world Benchrest is the most accurate sport on the planet.
There is a monumental difference between shooting from as bench and Benchrest shooting.
In an earlier post that has been edited someone posted there was no time limit and there is.
Someone posted you could wait for the wind to die down and you can't.
Someone posted that your shots are marked/spotted and they are not.
In benchrest your barrel is toast at 1000 rounds but some will keep shooting them anyway.
In longrange benchrest the large barrels like "Switchbarrel" who posts here shoot will get re-crowned after every 500 shots to remove any firecracking from the cold air burning at the muzzle.
In longrange benchrest the large barrels will get set back at 1000 rounds to get rid of the throat erosion.
In benchrest the ideal combination is owned by 99% of the shooters so reloading and shooter skill separates the wheat from the chaff.
In benchrest you will find the best reloaders on the planet bar none.
In benchrest if you don't recognize your mistakes and learn from them you will never win much.
In benchrest if you don't understand headspace you are considered low hanging fruit.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

Never heard the firecracking theory, doesn't make much sense to me. The one I heard was that cleaning every 10 shots or so (cleaning 100 times per 1000 shots, wow!!!) when drawing the brush back in past the crown, the brush would damage the crown. So Cal Precision Rifle Team, NRA Life, WEGC Precision Bolt Rifle Director, NRL Member, Bolt Action Rifle Groupie, NRA Pistol Distinguished ExpertComment

I meant in regards to firecracking at the muzzle end, which is a long way from the fireball that sent the bullet downrange, and cold air interacting with the muzzle. That theory I've never heard of and was wondering more about. So Cal Precision Rifle Team, NRA Life, WEGC Precision Bolt Rifle Director, NRL Member, Bolt Action Rifle Groupie, NRA Pistol Distinguished ExpertComment
