I like Older the better. Matching numbers is always good.
I dont really care if it is counterbored.

If you dont have a bore light, buy one at WalMart, or take a flashlight and put it at one end while you look in the other and see how the bore looks. You want pronounced rifling, and a little brown is okay, but you dont want rusted or huge pits. (You can remove the bolt, and look down one end while shining the light down the other) Of course, make sure it is not loaded...........

Buy more than one out the gate... Say at least three ... They are going to multiply anyways

Look for a good bore, try to avoid pitting and rust. Some Mosins look great until you take the stock off and the underside is rusted & pitted. Unfortunately most people are not going to to a stock off inspection of the rifle so you take your chances.

M44 is a handy little rifle and makes a good companion to the M91/30

The Big5 on Haven had a couple last week for 200.00, I looked at the one on the rack and it look as good or better then the one I got from Turners.

I'd like to get a M44 before the end of the year

Feel the trigger break, feel the bolt, check the spring on the magazine.

I purchased two. The older and more worn out one has a better bolt and magazine spring.
The newer better looking one has a better trigger.

Ended up putting the smoother older bolt on the rifle with the better trigger.
Sort of harvesting them both to make one decent rifle.
