advise on a tactical style rifle

I would love to be able to drop $5-7000 on a bad *** bolt gun but thats not really feasable for me. So what i would like to know is whats available i would like a .308 box fed bolt rifle for 1200-1500. build vs buy options, any info would be great.

It sounds like the op is looking for a zombie sniper rifle.

"tactical" doesn't describe what you actually want to do with it. I really doubt you're going to be doing some urban sniping like a pd swat team. What do you actually plan on doing with it? Does your $1200-$1500 budget include glass?

smittty nailed it... the ability to hit a zombie sized target at 1000yards would be the goal.

Check out the savage 10 fcp McMillan. Sounds like exactly what you are looking for. Or a remmy 700 and pick a stock and dbm. Then pick out your choice of optics in your price range. A 10-15x on the high end will take you out to 1000. You can go with more magnification as you wish.

I'm going to give some unusual advice. Go down to the gun store and buy the first rifle that you think you might like. Then just go out and shoot it. After a year of working on your marksmanship you'll know what you like and what you don't like. Hopefully you will have learned how to handload, read the wind and hold the center of the target.

I think the Mosin-Nagant would make a very good zombie rifle for the beginner.
Maybe put it in a Archangel stock.

I would recommend a Remington 700. Based on your budget, and the need of a "tactical rifle," a Remington 700P LTR for $975 at my local dealer. Here's a link with the data -> http://www.galleryofguns.com/genie/D...&zipcode=91776

Otherwise, you could buy the cheapest Remington 700 and build it from there:
                            - Shorten barrel
                            - New bolt handle
                            - Threaded with muzzle break
                            - Aftermarket stock
                            - Trigger job
                            - Magazine setup
That would probably put you in the ~$1,400.
