Remington 5R 308 build ring question

Got no responses on the optics thread so heres my post

got the Vortex Viper PST 6-24 in FFP 20moa multi point base by weaver, my question is if i made a good decision on rings. Right now I have some leupold PRW 30mm high rings(unopened and returnable and sexy i think). Seems like 50mm bells require high rings but if anyone has any suggestions or have gone lower with this scope/base setup it would be appreciated. Ring height is 1.09in on the highs and the mediums are .97in. Thanks!

Cant wait to shoot this thing. Waiting on the scope/base in the mail so i have time.

I have a Vortex 6-24x50mm FFP with a EGW 20moa rail with EGW low rings. On a savage long range hunter. I had to look at a lot of pics, and threads to find out what people were using, and i found out the low rings will work for my set up. I also email Vortex and asked them which rings i could use. He recommend mediums just to be safe but i could get a way with low rings. But i see a lot of people use low rings with 50mm scopes. I wanted my scope closest to the barrel with out touching so i went with the lows scope rings.

If you are fine with the high rings then keep them. if you want something lower i would go with mediums, or even the low ones if they fit.

6-24x50 PST on Nightforce 20 moa base, low burris extreme rings over a very large barrel.

Bases and rings are a personal choice. I use what I am familiar with in most cases. Picking the right base and rings with a new rifle and scope can be a bit hit and miss. Doing it right the first time ain't easy. The best way, is to do a careful first time rough assembly and see where you are. If it's not perfect, send it back and get the right rings. The hard part is if you have a 20MOA base and the scope wont come up to 100 yards, that could be a problem but you wont know until you shoot it.

I have a 5R in .308, 20MOA base, 50mm scope objective and it works fine with LaRue low rings (.875 in.).

Hey Ben, i'd say the brand of rings are less important here than the height, no?

You should double check where those are measured from. It will tell u why the .25 lows will work. Have fun putting it all together.

yeah i assume the .25s are measured from base of ring to bottom of scope tube where as the rest is im sure must be base of the entire mount to the bottom of the scope tube. I found the egw lows listed as both .850 and .25 . I like the burris ones and ended up ordering them.

good info, especially after going to turners and bass pro shop, nobody seemed to know anything about rings(while i was there at least).

The burris xtreme tactical rings are great, you'll have no problems. I'm on my third rig with them.

Badger mediums, because they are stout and you won't have to bed them.

I mounted a 6-24 viper PST on a 5r with a 20moa base tonight using badger medium rings.
There was more than enough room between the scope and the barrel to go to low rings.
