LOP too short, suggestions

Trying to see what I can do to my stock to add another 2" to my LOP before saving and dropping the coin on an adjustable stock..


no my arms won't reverse and start getting shorter

my LOP is 15" my stock is 13"

recoil pad is glued on, no idea where to start, stock is a HS Precision Sendero in case anyone is wondering

this will work for a r700 stock?
it says shotguns, or does that not matter

They are made over sized and then you trim them down. I use blue tape and a good table top belt sander.

Hey EX you are going to upgrade to a fully adjustable stock, right? If not then we can change the recoil pad to a much thicker one and install a Karsten Cheek Piece. Bed the recoil lug and you are done. Until the TRG order is placed.

I see your problem, your arms are too long. There is no good way to shorten your arms that wouldn't leave pretty big scars so you probably want to make your rifle longer. Call HSP and see if they will put a long recoil pad on for you.

I don't think you pad is glued on that would be a bad move. I have found the screw holes are just very small slits and you need to pull down on the sides equally to find them.

If you don't want to spend the coin on the adjustable one, you can always just shape some wood and paint it.

I own this. It is really great. The bee's knees, in fact. I have a bony shoulder and like shooting irons, so I need extra drop in my rifles or I get bruised. Kinda like a ladies stock but for orangutan arms and no toe out.

How do I know this? Because I fit one of those to a rifle of mine and tuned till it felt right.

Those Graco adjustable plates are really nice. Almost anyone can find their ideal configuration in there somewhere. They are heavy, though, and they cost a few bucks. Here is an alternative that may or may not appeal to you.

I learned this from some true professionals, who had the money and access to pro gunsmiths to use a more elegant solution. They preferred this method because of the weight saving and rock solid stability it offered.

They identified their ideal length of pull and drop at heel using duct tape and spacers like these:

Trial and error, and a lot of ammo and range time. They used paper targets to prove what worked best for them. They did not rely on feel or comfort level. Small groups were their witnesses, because they can't lie or deceive.

Once they had settled on precisely what they wanted, they either took their results to a pro, or they broke out the bench-top belt sander. They used spacers and a recoil pad to achieve exactly the right stock configuration for their shooting situation.

The guys who felt they needed adjustability to allow for different shooting positions, vest thickness, etc. installed stainless threaded anchors in the butt stock and used hex head bolts (Home Depot, Lowe's...) so they could change the LOP by adding or removing spacers.

It's not hard to achieve professional looking results in your garage, if you are patient and understand the use of different grits. Or, you could have a pro do it for not much money.

The advantages are bullet-proof stability, lighter weight, and lower cost. The big disadvantage is much slower adjustability. The Graco adjusts solidly, and very quickly and easily. The weight and change in balance is probably a problem for some guys, a benefit for others.

The appearance issue is up to you!

You can buy a really thick piece of rubber butt and add it. I have an ithaca, and when I had the original wood furniture it came with a 2" piece of rubber the previous owner modded. It was really nice. Not pretty but totally usefull. Looked like it just needed a finer grit if looks concern you.
