    bolt action AR

I've seen shots fron Camp Perry where they are using bolt action uppers. Is it a different upper or just regular with different parts?

Different upper, like they use in England (restricted to bolt action). I imagine it's something like a side-charging upper without a gas tube. It's an abomination.

You can use the same upper with the gas tube removed and the ports blocked.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

i'm guessing, but looks like a regular set up with no gas tube and a side charging handle.

Are you SURE it was an AR and not a tube gun?
Tube guns are common in the match rifle category and they look like an AR from more than 20ft away...

Was it Mossberg doing a module bolt gun that had ar-15 pistol grip and butt stock?

If only we had a sub-forum called Centerfire Rifles - Manually Operated where we could talk about things like this.. oh wait.

Edit: I see that it has been moved to the proper forum.

At this point I see more tube guns on the line (like randall showed) than I see ar match rifles (spaceguns).

Yeah... tube guns are getting more and more common... at a glance they look like an AR, but they aint cheap.....

I dont recall actual history, but as I recall it was David Tubb with the Tubb 2000 that got people into 'tube guns'.

                      bolt action AR

Tube guns took off in popularity to offer a cheaper alternative to the ever increasing price of the Tubb 2k. The main difference between a tube gun and the T2k (now T5k lol) is the tube gun requires a separate barreled action. They can readily take 700 footprint actions, and the sky's the limit in terms of what you want it for. You can shoot a tac match on Saturday, f-class match on Sunday, then a NRA Highpower match the following Saturday without much fuss.

McMillan has removed the Tubb name and is now called the Alias. It's an interesting design and is made of 17-4PH stainless, which partly explains its princely sum.

I built a bolt action AR from a Colt M-4 H-Bar Elite lower. Added the following:

Along with a F-A side cocking bolt carrier which are not shown in stock now. Then added a custom manufactured 24" heavy contour Hart barrel without a gas port. I did not want a blocked gas port as the port still accumulates fouling and can be seen as "easily convertible" to self-loading. Hart Barrels was the only one that found manufacturing a portless barrel no problem. I also had mine chambered for .204 Ruger, for varmint hunting. I installed a JP Enterprises EZ Trigger, and tension pin http://www.sinclairintl.com/gun-part...prod35481.aspx I also shimmed the front pin with .0045" shims to remove the lateral slop. These were made from revolver cylinder end-shake shims honed flat between carborundum stones. Thus far several loads have shown potential:

The load below uses Hornady's .204" 24 gn NXT lead free bullet. This is a ten shot group at 100 yards, velocity around 3,900 fps. I blew one shot and dropped another out of the group. The diamond is .5" on a side. Good enough for varmint hunting. Loads using the 26 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade also show promise. AAC LT-32 Powder is amazing so far. The group was fired from a Harris Bipod and rear bag.

I also tried a Criterion AR-15 barrel with a plugged gas block in .223/5.56 but accuracy, while good, was not up to my standard. That gas port may have been the problem.

Two things about the bolt action, brass drops out completely cool, you can pick it up without being burned. Fired brass is also free of fouling except for a ring about halfway down the neck - just what is wanted. Which also means that the action interior is clean and pristine.

DPMS at one time listed a side cocking upper receiver without the charging handle slot, but I don't see it listed now. The standard charging handle is redundant in a bolt action.

I have an idea to convert a lower to prevent anything but a bolt action upper from being fitted, should the political madness continue. More to follow at a later date.

Yep tube gun - thinking on converting my varmint AR to a single shot gun. It'll have a magazine but will need to be hand cycled each time. Now do I machine a bolt handle or just use the stock charging handle? I'll leave the gas system intact but block it with a set screw and loctite.

Yes, you can use the stock CH but it's not exactly ergonomic for manually cycling it every shot.
