Rem 700 16.5"/McRee G5 compact folder (How much scope?)

I've just about checked all the guns off my want/need list and now focusing a bolt gun. My local range currently goes out to 600 yrds. I like the idea of a mid-range compact bolt gun. I have a custom Noveske with a Aimpoint H1 & just purchased an Elcan SpectorDr for it. So the bolt gun would fill the 400-800 yrd requirement and be mainly be used by my son & myself to punch paper @ the local range. I'm not looking at doing anything custom to it & will use bolt on stuff, as I'm sure the stock gun can shoot better then me.

This is what I've ordered already:

Remington SPS Tactical 308 w/16.5" barrel
McRee G5 TMAG compact folding stock
Harris Bipod BRM-S w/Larue LT706 mount
Larue 20 MOA rail
Larue ultra low QD rings
KRG Bolt Lift kit

I need to order:

Timney trigger (510)
AICS mags
Surefire muzzle brake
Scope (Vortex/Nightforce)

I've been looking through all the threads and feel that the two brands I'd like to stick with are Vortex PST and Nightforce. Now comes my question. How much power would I need for the distance I plan to shoot. I've looked at the 2.5-10's, 4-16's & 6-24's. I like the idea of the smaller scope with a 44mm objective but don't know if the 2.5-10 would be enough. The 4-16 seems to be the best choice and that's what I'm leaning towards. Is a higher powered scope an overkill or not?

Now comes which brand. Like I said this will mainly be a range toy & I'm new to this and don't plan on reloading or anything. The Vortex seems to be a good product (I see alot of mid level guns running them) & Nightforce seems to be what alot of people end up with in the end.

So if you were building my gun, what scope, power & reticle would you go with? Would like to spend less than $2k.

What is your budget? Cause a 5-25 S&B or Premier would be my pick.

Bushnell Elite Tactical LRS 3-12x44mm with the G2 reticle would be a nice fit for something like that.

I would pass on the Vortex 2.5-10x with the 44mm objective since it lacks side parallax adjustment, but I would consider the 2.5-10x32 FFP if size & weight is one of your objectives.

I like my magnification and most of all my scopes have 50mm objectives but they can get a bit large (size and weight), but it also depends on what type of shooting you like to do.

If you want to consider something bigger, I would consider the SWFA 5-20 HD or Vortex Razor 5-20x50

Vortex Razor or Bushnell ERS or XRS. If you dont need FFP then get the Nightforce.

I was originally going to go with the Trijicon TR23-2G, but don't like the reticle. The Nightforce that I was looking at is the NXS 5.5-22 & 3.5-15 and can be found for $1800.

If you go NF then get the Mil-R or MOAR reticles. As far as 5.5-22 or 3.5-15 that is your personnel choice. Both will suit the job just fine.

Cool, thanks. I never looked at the Bushnell's and it looks like the last 2 listed have 34mm tubes. I will look at the LRS model though. I think if I were to spend $1800+ I'd go with the Nightforce over the Razor.

That's the one that got me looking at Nightforce. I just didn't know if I'd have regrets with the lower power later on.

I like it. I have a SASS I will be putting one on. NF has always been tier 1 reliably for me. My rifle fell out of a tree before and down a cliff both times the NF was fine. Rifle needed new paint but hey, accidents happen.

I love my vortex crossfire. I'm fine with the AO being on the front as well. I got the 6-18 and 600 yards is fine for me to see.

Just my opinion, but I like the Razor more.

Vortex makes fine optics, but the Razor is a real cut above the rest of their lineup. Optically I prefer the Razor over the NXS I used.

If you can get behind some of these scopes sometimes it can make the decision a lot easier.

I still think the Bushnell with the G2 reticle would be an excellent fit.

Thanks ExtremeX-looks like the Bushnell might the ticket. Looks like they can be found for just under $900 & fall between the Vortex PST line & the upper end scopes mentioned. The only neg I have seen is they weigh about 4oz more then some of the others!
