Model 7 Action same as 700?

I was curious if the model 7 action was the same action as a 700 just re-branded?

I was wondering this because I have been wanting to get a nice 700 for long range shooting. However I already have a model 7 and was curious to find out if I would be able to re-barrel it with a rem 700 barrel and stock to get a decent long range gun.

What are some of the communities thoughts on this?

Model 7 is typical to the XP-100 pistol and 600/660 rifle actions. Same barrel tennon and breeching, but it is a little shorter overall. Different guard screw spacing and a shorter bridge. Trigger is slightly differnt also.
Not sure how it would stack up against a full size SA 700 for a "long range" gun. I had an XP-100 pstol action converted to a rifle in 260, and it was amazingly accurate.

I don't know about the rebarreling aspect, but the Model 7 action is different from the 700. It's not just a "short 700" action. Different scope mounts and stock are required also. I have an old 660 in 6mm Remington, a fairly new 673 in 350 Rem Mag and a Rem Custom Shop XP 100 in 223. From what I recall the chronology is XP first, 600/660 next followed by the 7 and then the 673.

I'd expect that somehow a Remington 700 barrel can be attached to a Remington 7 action. I haven't noticed much by way of aftermarket support with respect to stocks for the Number 7.

I would say that by the time barrels are switched, stocks and triggers bought that just buying a Remington 700 is probably the better approach. Although I'm not certain what "long range shooting" means - targets, hunting, steel pigs, etc?

My thinking was if the actions were the same or almost the same to basically take the 7 .308 action and pair it with a bull barrel and nice stock. Then see what I can get it to do out to like 800 (more if I was lucky)

From the replies here and other similar threads I think picking up a 700 will be route I take.

Nothing special about rebarreling a Model 7. The barrel tennon dimensions are the same as a Model 700. Gunsmith fitting required of course. I just rebarreled a Model 7 to 7mm-08, using a Douglas Remington Sporter contour barrel blank.
