My New custom 28" 6.5 barrel *PICS*

After many months of anxiousness, finally got my McGowen barrel machined to my specs

    Chambered in 6.5x55 Swede
    28" long
1.2" diameter to 1" dia muzzle
    11 degree crown
    1:8.5 twist

    pre-fit machined for Rem 700

I dip rubber to make crown covers for each of my barrels

Yay for no longer heat soaking the barrel after 4 shots!

                Beautiful Rifle.

I'm curious about your crown covers. Is this an involved process?

I work at a company that designs and manufactures aerospace parts, the cutters/roughers/end mills that CNC's use get dipped into a heated vat of plastic like rubber when stored to protect the edges.
I just made solid pieces of round that were the size of my muzzles and dipped them.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, that's a great idea.

My that's a big one. You are going to need double hernia surgery after you build that one, that's rail gun size.

                        Thank you, no problem.
I've notice the one I've had on my .308 McGowen barrel for almost a year is pretty beat up - and it's always snug on the end of my barrel when I'm not shooting - so to think that same sort of wear could have been done to the muzzle/crown encouraged me to make more.

Curious why you went so long? The 6.5x55 isn't really a big powder burner like a belted magnum. I have a McGowen in 243 that shoots less than 0.25" groups.

You are going to have a sweet shooter when its done!

Actually, among modern action hand loaders, 28 29 and even 30 inches isn't uncommon in this cartridge when doing distance work. Especially since I'm using a slow burning powder like rl22.

Longer barrels are better for long distance: more muzzle velocity.
