Not a problem. This is my long range build, my midrange 5-600 yard 308 shoots 155 Palma and 168 amax using Varget through a McGowen stainless 26" 1:11 barrel, simple choate stock, savage action and 1.5lb trigger using a leupold 6-20x50. It shoots the lights out, boringly accurate with the right handloads. Speratic 3" swinging steel round plate hits at 600, you can choose where to hit on the six inch.
This 6.5 is a 1991 original r700, only year made. Bobby hart wood stock with billet aluminum bedded chassis. Vortex 6-20x44 and 2lb trigger. I have a 28" McGowen cromoly barrel being rifled as we speak. I use it for 6-1200 yards with a theoretical supersonic range of 1350-1400. It only shines with hand loads, factory ammo is made for swedish mausers.
Both assembled by me, Harris bipods, nightforce steel picatinny rails. 20moa on the 6.5. I machined rear adjustable monopods for both of them out of cromoly.
I like both of them a lot. My first rifle I learned distance precision on was a Win model 70 so I've had the top 3 (imo) choices for precision manufactures. The bolt lift on the Savage is a bit heavy and clunky, but can be modified. The Vortex scope on my 6.5 works and looks great but has a bit too thick crosshairs for my precision needs, the Leupold's fine duplex is beautiful. The jeweled bolt on the Rem feels nice. Both are honestly darn accurate, I'd give the edge to the savage right now because it can take down 3" targets that I cant hit with any other rifle - but with the new 28" McGowen coming for my 6.5 I think that edge may become equal or be surpassed by the Swede once I figure out a perfect load.
I give a lot of credit to the perfection of a load I developed for the .308. 44.85gr of varget, Fed 210 primers and 168 Amax hit whatever you point it at after doing some math.
I load hot. Modern actions are miles ahead of book maxed for mausers, especially a Remington 700.
Tula lrp, 140 vld's or 140 amaxs infront of way north of 45gr of rl22 ill say that. In Norma brass.
A .612 g1 ballistic coefficient and 2850-2920fps really gets the job done, only way I personally can tackle a 1000y 12" plate in the wind.
The amaxs like to be weight seperated and jameed .05 onto the lands. The vlds are picky about COAL.
