In my next project, I am going to build a custom rifle. What do you guys suggest for a Remington 700 pattern bolt action for 308 or 6.5 Creemoor? Budget actions or mid range. I don’t want to spend 2k on the action so anything under that

Depends on what you’re using it for, but if you’re going for long range precision I’d do 6.5. I have a couple Remington 700s in .308 and with the recoil it’s difficult at long range to sight in follow up shots in a timed situation. That’s why I got a third Remington 700 in 6.5. I’m talking 500+ yards. If you only ever shoot under 300 yards and don’t need to beat a clock then go 308. -
Like Ora said, what's it for?
Hunting, big or small game?
Competition, bench rest, F class, precision rifle, long range or short range?
Different games require different action specs.

I have a muzzle brake on my Remington 700 308 and can see my splashes at 650 yards. It makes the recoil very manageable because it keeps the gun relatively still. I have not shot it past 650 yards yet, but that might change this weekend.Depends on what you’re using it for, but if you’re going for long range precision I’d do 6.5. Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

I'm partial to the Impact 737R but really any of the current crop of SA receivers that take a prefit barrel would be fine. Even if you don't go with a prefit, they are all made with tight tolerances and are smooth, short throw and have the extras you would add like scope rails with built in angle.
I have no experience with the Aero Solus but the price point is very attractive.Anyone press will hear the fat lady sing.

I had a Remington 700 VS in .308W, built in the 1980’s. A few years back, Randall installed a medium contour Bartlein 24” barrel that he chambered in 6.5CM. He also fitted a Ross Schuller brake, a new lug, and a new trigger. He also opened up the base mounting holes on the receiver. On top of the 20 minute base, I fitted Spuhr rings, and a very nice Kahles optic with a 34mm main tube. The stock is by HS Precision.
With my own loads, I have had no trouble repeatedly engaging the 1K yard silhouettes at the school we attend for long range rifle classes, from field shooting positions under time pressure. The quality of Randall’s work is outstanding, and he is local to the Los Angeles area.
About the only aspect of that rifle (and that of every R700) that I wish to upgrade further is to convert the extractor/ejector to the M16 style.Comment

The cheapest way is to watch for new-to-the-market actions. They're often sold for $200-$400 below their market value because they're trying to get established in the marketplace. I've seen $900 actions or even less get introduced, then raised up to $1100 or more a month later.
If you're considering going used, the higher end Bergara's are basically the same as custom actions.Comment

In that case, 6.5 Creed if you dont reload, If you do reload, a lot of PRS shooters have moved to 6mm cartridges.
Medium Palma barrel or MTU or something in that heavy profile and your total weight ends up in the 18 ish pounds or more... recoil is very light and spotting impacts is easy- especially with a brake.Comment

Go read about the Remington 700 3 rings of steel and then explain why you would want to get rid of that on your rifle.

That's the results from a roughly 160,000 PSI overload.
After removing the case and extractor/ejector from the bolt, I checked the headspace and there was no measurable change.
I had the bolt and reciever penetrant die checked and no damage was found.
I put the gun back together with a new extractor and ejector and it still shot to the same point of aim.
The 3 rings of steel are a real thing.
No bolt with a cut through the front of the bolt nose for an extractor will survive such abuse.Last edited by ar15barrels; 01-16-2026, 2:07 PM.Randall Rausch

Hello Randall;
When the extractor on my R700 BDL, .30-06 (manufactured in 1980) broke during a deer hunt, I figured that I don’t trust that particular rifle. This was with very mild loads; the case came right out by simply allowing a thin brass welding rod (all I had in the truck at the time) to drop in from the muzzle. That rifle has well over several K rounds through it (was my primary hunting rifle before I went to another platform), and is still very accurate by hunting rifle standards. To be honest, I have not had any further issue, and the extractor was easily replaced.
As far as high pressures go, I keep everything in the lower ranges, and am not as concerned.
BTW, that 700 re-barrel to 6.5 you did for me has been great.

Give alamo precision rifles a look. I currently own two of their rifles (6.5 & 6mm creedmoor) build quality is excellent and lead time wasn't too long from what I remember. They even have rifles in stock already builtComment

Defiance Machine has a new action for $1100. Looks like a good deal.

I'd consider selling my Masterpiece Arms, but it's a 6.5 Creedmoor, and you wouldn't be competitive in PRS. But the barrel would last longer. :-)
