Scored another H&R Handi Rifle in S&W 500 Magnum today

I already own one and man they are awesome albeit single shot. I cast and reload for my guns, but these 500's are just unbridled excitement. Just the sound of authority with which the slugs pound steel is incredible. If you've never shot one...you owe it to yourself to explore the 500 in a rifle form.. Yes, many people consider these a novelty, a niche gun, just a bragging piece, and they are all right, but why let that stop you from enjoying life. Anyone else own one?

Not in .500, but in a number of other calibers. Yes, they are good hunting rifles.
When I want a more powerful single-shot, I reach for one of several Ruger #1’s.

I owned a couple Ruger no 1's, but just wasn't in love with them so I got rid of em. I now own many H&R long guns, however, most are 12 gauge single shots, 3 are 32 gauge, a .357, 2 45-70's, 1 .444, and now 2 500 magnums. Just something about these older guns that keeps me buying 2-3 a year. Simple to operate, more forgiving when reloading my own ammo for them, and fairly inexpensive to buy. One of the best memories I have owning these is going trap shooting with the family and everyone had a single shot break open. People all around us with $15-$20 thousand dollar shotguns thought it was the coolest thing ever. My daughter and her boyfriend busting clays with $125 dollar shotguns lol. If I could take the 500's trap shooting...I would. I will eventually buy another Ruger no 1, I just have to decide on what caliber this time...

There is something I find very appealing with single-shot firearms, be they rifles, pistols, or shotguns. I have witnessed high-level skeet/trap shooters break clay birds endlessly with several box-stock H&R singles, proving that in the hands of a capable shooter, one need not spend thousands of $$$ to have success.
As a long time reloader, single-shots can be very easy to load for, and all of our single-shot rifles are more than accurate enough for any reasonable hunting shot we would attempt. As training tools they are about perfect.
My current favorite single-shot is a Ruger #1 in .375H&H Magnum; likely it will go along with us on our next safari.

Started DROS yesterday on this beauty, never fired-safe queen. Now my other 500 handi rifle will have a range buddy lol. Picture is bad (store lighting), but in person...rifle is a beauty for sure. Already have a bunch of loaded rounds, but casted a couple hundred more today and will powder coat them in a few days when the lead sorta cures.

I really like the iron sights on that rifle.

They are pretty cool. Reminds me of the sights on the old Remington 870 police guns with the slug barrels but with fiber optic inserts.
