    Savage Problems.

I recently purchased a Savage Switchback in 6.5 PRC.
What a piece of junk. When I first got the rifle I ran a borescope down the barrel. I was very dirty. I went ahead and cleaned it and ran the borescope again. There was a lot of copper fowling. Then I cleaned it again and got rid of most of the fowling. Thats when the machine marks showed up in the entire bore.
Next I decided to run a few rounds to check out the action. I had to pound on the bolt to get it to pick up a round from the magazine. After looking at it for a while I noticed that the magazine lips were catching on the extractor grove. I went ahead and bent the lips out enough so that they didn't catch on it anymore.
Now it was picking the case up from the magazine, but it would lock up about 1/4 of an inch before the bolt closed. Happens every time I feed from the magazine. You have to back the bolt off and push it back forward to get it to chamber. As long as you have the magazine in and single feed from the top of it, it works great.
Next I took the stock off. What a flimsy piece of crap. There is very little support for the action.
That is when I started looking for a new stock to replace it. That is when I discovered that Savage had changed the action for the 110 model. The standard 110 replacement stock will not work on the Switchback model. So that is when I decided to go ahead and glass bead the lug on the recever.\
Now I took it to the range with some hornady 147 eld match ammo. It chambered with no issue (Single feed), but after firing the bolt was very stiff opening it. I ran the normal break in. and couldn't get better than 1 3/4" to 2-1/2" groups.
I went ahead and sent a message to Savage on September 3 rd. I checked it today and no one has responded to my complaint.

I would like to know if anyone here has ideas or comments about this subject. Here is a quote from Savage's website. "We don’t just offer the industry’s best firearms—we also do whatever it takes to help our customers."

You should not expect the quality of a $1000+ rifle for $600.
These things you mention are par for the course with low cost rifles.

With Savage I'm not surprised, I have 2 Savage rifles and they are both very good rifles. One is a 1930's mod.99 .300 Savage take down, pure quality. The other is a bolt action in .338 Federal not a bunch of those made and it is a very good rifle. All the other Savage rifles I have owned were junk which is how I describe Savage customer service. Sometimes you get what you pay for and sometimes you get lucky. Get rid of that Savage and buy a Tikka or any of 1/2 dozen others.

Call Savage. But you will have to send it in. Turn around is usually 2 months.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

This is somewhat true for the general case but some might interpret it as everything gets better as the cost goes up. The $2k Savage/Remington/Ruger/Tikka/Mossberg/..... rifle may have a heavier contour or nicer external finish on the action and barrel but the bore will be manufactured exactly the same way to exactly the same standard. It will also have the same sketchy primary extraction as the cheaper model. If the action screw holes are off, a chassis may make the accuracy worse than the cheap flexible stock.

If he wants a smooth shiny bore, he'll need to buy a cut rifled blank and have it chambered. And then never shoot it.

I'm curious about the fowling. Just feathers or droppings too?

The Switchback looks like a Sportsmans Warehouse special intended to pull some cost out.

No Accustock which would have given a full length aluminum support in the stock and a recoil lug clamp. The comb adjustment on the Accufit was also deleted.

The bottom bolt release makes replacement stocks much harder to find. It also gives simpler bolt internals. Probably cheaper to manufacture but the bolt lift is also lighter on the ones I've handled.

The 110 Tactical would have kept the Accustock features plus given AICS magazines that feed well in that cartridge.

The Switchback is $620 on the Sportsmans Warehouse and the 110 Tactical is $800. The 110 Tactical is $655 at Grabagun. The 110 Tactical includes an AICS magazine that increases the package cost $60-$80.

Yeah, well, it's "good enough" for an inexpensive hunting rifle.
